I'd think putting the XL in the neck would kill the balance with any bridge pickup without lowering it substantially and thus defeating the purpose. I have no personal experience, but I've never known the XL to be geared towards clean players?

I suggest sticking with the C in the neck and the L in the bridge.

Yes, but you'll probably find it a bit fiddly to change both pickup position and filter setting. However, if you like it, go for it

I have read the L500 sticky post as well as the Q Filter post and I think I understand that I can wire the Q filter in such a way (with capacitors etc...) that, with a push-pull tone pot, I can either use the Q Filter "clean" or have it run through the caps etc.... And that this may create a "pickup specific" aspect of the filter; that is, the "clean" setting might be best for the L500 L while the more intricate set up...

If you use an XL in series mode, the treble response for clean tones is a bit compromised due to the high inductance. Don't get me wrong, it's still a great tone with way more clarity than other high-inductance buckers, but don't expect a shimmering, glassy clean tone.

I agree with Fuzzy! You can also change the values on the tone pots so you can dial in a desirable amount of coloration to the midrange without having the setup drop off your highs above resonance.

A hipshot...use the XL in bridge position and L in neck position, but wire them in parallel, not in series as usual.

What would that achieve?

I probably should have stated that I pretty much play clean.

Is the L500 XL suitable for clean playing? My hope is that the guitar will have a very responsive touch so I can take advantage very subtle shades of tone without having to play really hard.

Any thoughts on this???

i would go for the L & C , keeping the XL for a one pickup config with a q filter and serie parallel switch.

I believe the L500XL in the bridge and the L500L in the neck would give you all the power you will ever need.

I admit the idea sounds a bit over the top for me, but it shouldn't be a problem to try the XL in the neck position. I mean, the guitar won't get damaged, but watch your amp and ears!

Hello.

I am currently building a USA Custom Guitar project. It is tele style, maple neck, mahogany body and spruce top, semi-hollow with 2 F-holes. It was going to have 3 BL 500's originally, but I decided later to go with just 2. I ordered three L500's some time ago and so have to choose now which ones to drop in. I have:
L500 C
L500 L
L500 XL.

I am considering dropping the C in the neck and the L in the bridge as perhaps this may be more...
