High-E string keeps breaking way too easily

Posts: 316 Thu, Sep 6, 2007 07:16:16 Bronze Member	Tags : None Hi guys, I have an original Fender vintage trem on one of my USACG Strats which I bought used (the trem - not the Strat). I set the guitar up and put a fresh set of .009 - .046 strings on, played like 5 songs - and the high-E snapped immediately (down by the ball end - at the sadlle). I thought whatever and replaced the high-E with another fresh string. A few bends later - the string snapped right off again. Replaced it one more time - 2 hours later - SNAP!!! Wtf? I even use Eb tuning, so the tension isn't even that big, and I don't use the trem at all. My playing style is pretty normal, I bend like 3 semitones at max. And I never had a prob like that on any of my other USACG Strats (which have different bridges). Same strings, tuning and playing style - those strings normally last for months... It's driving me crazy - I'm having nightmares of strings snapping. If this continues I'll develop a "Bend-a-phobia". Seriously, any ideas what I can do?

Posts: 1240 Thu, Sep 6, 2007 15:15:57 Contributing Silver Member	It sounds like you have a burr on the bridge saddle. If so, it'll need to be polished with a bit of fine (600 grit) emory paper where the string passes through. -Ben

I registered just to answer this one but man this board is a pain in regards to getting to the point where you can post - you might consider some kind of alternative software and hosting in the future as I'm positive others like myself have not posted due to the intrusive nature of the registration. anyways... back on topic. The nut, string retainers and bridge saddles are all places where rough spots can take out strings - but the bridge plate itself has always been the most troublesome part of a Fender tremelo system for me (in regards to string breakage). The best way I know of to fix this issue is to strip wire insulation to slide over the strings. Just enough so that instead of rubbing against the sharp edge of the bridge plate (under the saddles) you have something that will be friendlier to plain steel strings. It works and has cured my issues with string breakage on many guitars. Hope this helps, Brock

Its got nothing to do with the USACG neck, that's fairly certain. Could be a good time to upgrade those saddles with some real nice ones from Bill Callaham. Precision made, like jewelry.
