Pretty nice. I remember actually being fairly impressed with the prior version they were selling a few years ago. Instead of the historically correct mahogany construction, it was made out of cedar, cypress or something like that. Whatever it was, it sounded incredible at GC through a little Marshall.
IIRC, it did have a P-90 instead of that "special design single coil". This thing looks like a cool Gibson alternative to an Esquire. "To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and hear the lamentation of their women." - The Governator

Yes, I liked the old one, but always wished it had a humbucker rout. Overall, I think the new one would suit me better.

"Orange box" | #6 | ||

Thanks for the video. Looks like a winner as long as the QC is in place. I'm not sure what Henry J. meant when he said that the "orange box" somehow meant something, but it seemed to have something to do with price. At the price he stated, those may fly out the door. Personally, I'd much rather go that route than the Esquire route for a single pickup guitar. YMMV.

Re: "Orange box" | #7 | ||

I gather the guitars were shipped in the orange box back in 1959, and by not shipping in a hard case, the price is kept low. That's what I think he was saying.
For me, this is the best single-pickup guitar I've seen to-date. And if the list price converts to a significantly lower street price, I'm probably going to want one sooner rather than later. Aide toi et le ciel taidera (Aid thyself and heaven will aid thee) |

Me too. I may have too many guitars and amps already, but there's always room for a Melody Maker and a Champion 600!

Orange will be in fashion very soon in a store near you!
> For me, this is the best single-pickup guitar I've seen to-date. Why? Is it partly for the bang for buck factor? What makes this better than a Jr or an esquire? Will the tone knobs give something extra? I wonder where these are made? |

Great bang for the buck: a real, set-neck, lightweight, USA-made Gibson, for the price of an import. Plus, it's a bit different. I really like how it looks, and how it sounds in the clip. I would not buy a guitar routed for P-90's because the replacement options are very limited, and straight P-90's are very noisy. That's why I never got too excited about the previous Melody Maker. And PRS's new SE One is probably the best looking single-soapbar-equipped axe I've seen; LP Juniors do nothing for me. As far as being better than an Esquire: it's different, and I actually like the two-pickup Esquire/Tele. For me, a single-pup Esquire is missing what a Tele offers. It seems that this new Melody Maker would be complementary to my other guitars, and those on my wish list. It should also work well with my existing amplification, etc. Aide toi et le ciel taidera (Aid thyself and heaven will aid thee) |

Agreed, nocaster. I also like it, and am very eager to try it. I like it that it's very vintage but different.
But how did they reach the $400 list price, set neck AND a "Made In USA" tag on it? |

Am I right in assuming that the pickup is standard SC size?
If yes, I like it as well. That opens up quite a few options. I think it would be fun to see what one can get out of that single pup axe. It probably lets you concentrate more on playing...nice. Let the thunder roll and the lightning flash, I'm doing alright for country trash.

I love single pick up guitars. I built one with a Wilkinson, L-490N and no volume or tone controls.
Playing a guitar like that is like being set free. You can "flail-strum" close to the neck. I play it through a volume pedal and a wah to get any control options. That melodymaker looks and sounds fantastic in the video. Just wish they had TV Yellow. Hope they make lefty. |

Pretty cool as long as they keep quality in check.
Don't think I could live with a single Strat type pickup in the bridge spot though. --Garrett--

Quote: At first thought, I would think the same thing, but a few things come to mind. 1) In the clip, it sure doesn't sound like a Strat bridge pickup. 2) Even if it was a typical Strat-type pickup, you'd have to think that the shorter scale, mahogany construction and set neck have something to do with the tone too. Maybe a Strat pickup works well in such a construction scheme. 3) Maybe it's only Strat-like in physical appearance. We don't know how Gibson wound it. All good points. My mind is always churning on what my replacement options are.
I do like my new BL 298 in my Strat. That would probably be cool in the mahogany guitar with a q filter. Actually, bet I'd like the guitar a lot. I think I was just trying to talk myself out of one. Must... Stop... Wanting...more...guitars... |

...And the fixed TOM bridge. I believe fixed bridge strats give better tone from the bridge pickup. ------ I'm left to wonder how the list price figures into street price in Europe... And how soon can one expect these guitars to reach the markets here... |

> "I'm left to wonder how the list price figures into street price in Europe..."
The cheapest Squier Master Series at MF is US$359, so maybe that might be a point for comparison. We're talking a price that's little more than half what MF sells the MIM Esquire for. So, I think it's fair to say that these are going to sell like hot cakes. You're going to either need to pre-order or be sure that your local Gibson retailer lets you know the day they arrive. I really can't see them hanging around, and in export markets, there'll be 3-6 months between shipments. > "And how soon can one expect these guitars to reach the markets here..." I'd guess that it would be 3-6 months from the NAMM date. Aide toi et le ciel taidera (Aid thyself and heaven will aid thee) |
