Rolled fingerboard edges?

Posts: 353 Fri, Jul 4, 2008 03:05:29 Bronze Member	Tags : None Like em? Don't? Why? Why not? I've settled on a swamp ash tele body with a one piece maple neck. I have two strats, now one with rolled edges, one not. My Gibbie styled axes generally have flatter radii, no roll. Haven't decided which way to go on this project. Thought I'd ask what others are doing and why, maybe get some ideas or motivation one way or the other.

Posts: 34 Sun, Jul 6, 2008 04:32:58	I generally find my guitars have vintage string array, so this means the Es are kinda close to the edges above the 12th fret. A rolled edge makes string bending that high E a bit problematic. I don't do string-offs that much, but when I do, I kinda like the sound a more conventional fret edge produces. That's what I'm used to. Most of all, a heavily rolled edge, like scalloping, is simply not present from the factory in so many necks of guitars I have had around, so if the feature is added on a few I need to compensate, Too many things to keep track of as it is. I have my thumb wrapped a good bit of the time, but only to fret or mute the low 'E', never the 'A'. My fingers aren't too long for an average sized hand.

If you have a vintage-spec trem and a vintage-spec nut width, such a combo would rule out rolling the edges. i feel the weight of the world on my shoulder; as i'm gettin older ya'll people gets colder most of us only care about money-makin; selfishness got us followin the wrong direction wrong information always shown by the media; negative images is the main criteria infecting the [people's] minds faster than bacteria; [peeps] wanna act like what they see in the cinema

Re: needing to compensate, if I understand your point, I actually perfer my guitars to be different from each other; I like exploring the possibilities the difference makes. I do go for months or years at end leaning toward certain guitars because of preferences, but I can't tell you how many times I've done a 180 on preferences (in other threads I've explained my epiphany re tele's) Re: vintage spacing, it's not going to be a trem (2 7/32", right?), rather a 3 barrel tele (2 3/16"?); not much difference. I did cut my teeth on a 70s strat with a vintage space trem and stock fender nut, so to some extent, my technique is already adjusted to the string-close-to-the-edge-of-the-neck-syndrome; I've never noticed the problem. However, on my partscaster (vintage reissue trem), I cut the nut based on adequate edge of neck clearance. I measured it just now; its 3/32 less string spread than standard, pretty extreme. I have small fingers, and don't do much chording in the first position. I was considering Stewmac's 3 brass barrel tele bridge. It has a 2 1/8" string spread. Anyone have any experience with this bridge? Any good? My current thought based on feed back, is no (or very little) roll, standard spacing at the nut. It'll open up the chording spacing in the first position (compared to my partso strat). However, I could be swayed before it's over.

Now, I will never get another guitar with out the rolled edges. It just feels like it has been played for twenty years before I got and it is smoother than angels wings.
