Q filter What does it do, exactly?

Posts: 6 Wed, Jul 6, 2005 04:19:36	I'm new here but I think I understand the Q-Filter. However, I have one question: If I were to make a stomp box for controlling the L and EQ functions for different guitars and used two Q-Filters and two 250K pots, could I get it to work? I was thinking the box would just be input to the L knob to the EQ knob to output with an on/off switch in there somewhere. My main concern is whether or not the knobs (with respective Q-Filters attached) would work properly if they were wired in series (correct word?) with the guitar and the amp, as any stomp box/effects pedal normally is. Posts: 2 Thu, Feb 14, 2008 17:14:55	Does anyone have an Esquire wiring schematic, other than Bill's "Special Esquire Wiring". I changed out the standard Esquire setup of one of my guitars, for an L-290-TL-E and a Q-filter. I used Bill's "Special wiring" which puts the filter on the rear position of the 3-way switch. the filter is used alone, without any caps or resistors. I would like to try something else with this before I give up on it. As it stands now, I am going back to the original wiring and hope that it works with this noiseless pickup. This setup is clean, noiseless and boring. overdriven all position sound the same. Clean is the only way I can hear the differences of the 3 positions and the q-filter isn't any kind of a marvel in this rig. :(

Someone might be able to help you, but you'll probably have to start a new thread... most people don't check the stickied posts too often. Be sure to tell us what your setup is. I don't think using the filter without a cap and resistor is what you would want regardless, as it emulates lower output pickups in that configuration.

Is the old single cap tone totall obsolete now, or might a guy incorporate that somehow? If so any clever ideas? Also has anyone used a superswitch with BL pickups (preferably H/S/H)? If so a diagram would be killer, I'll post one when I get it doc'ed. I hoping to use the Q filter with a 3 pup axe and the Superswitch and two pushpull pots. Anyone else think this may be a deadly combo? I've gotta use these parts up! I imagine the Q filter might work really nice after a blocking cap in the tone section of a Marshall too. many thanks from Vancouver, Canada.

Posts: 2 Sat, Nov 22, 2008 20:21:13	OK, I gave up on the Esquier and tried this in one of my Tele's and am very pleased! I used this wiring with the .02 cap and a 10k ohm resistor. I first installed one with a set of Tonerider "Vintage Plus" pickups and even after bringing two new Tele's into the collection I always find myself playing the Filtered guitar in Q-tone mode. I picked up a 69 RI Thinline and added a set of B.L.'s new, covered neck pup, keystones for Tele's. The new Keystone are just as nice as the original, of course and made a HUGE improvement in the Thinline. But...... I keep Finding the Q-filtered Guitar to be the one I'm drawn to. I ordered two more filters several weeks back and today I added one to the Keystone's in the Thinline, and ABRACADABRA! Now I'll bet I spend more time on the Thinline. Oh Yeah, both are wired with a 4-way pickup selector. Now I'm gonna give some P-90's or some Humbuckers a chance to become magic, We'll see. Sorry for the " Rant" but I thought I owed a positive post to negate the one I left about the esquire. I will be ordering more of these, for the other Tele's at least!!!

I wonder if it might be better to wire the "Q pot" so that most of the resistance occurs from 5 to 10 as opposed to 5 to 0, as is normally done. Anyone try this?

I've got a custom Strat and I'm going to install a set of the new Micro-coil Keystone pickups. This Strat has unique wiring and only 1 Tone control for all pickups. It appears that there isn't a particular set of resistor and cap, that would be ideal for both the neck and the bridge pickup, so I'm fine with having it just work well with the bridge pickup. What I heard at NAMM was the bridge pickup becoming fatter, rounder, bigger, punchier, as the Tone was rolled down. I didn't get a chance to ask Bill about the specific values installed in the Strat they had. What would be a suggestion for the values to achieve the above mentioned bridge pickup qualities? Any other suggestions are welcomed too. Thanks! Ron...

So far, I'm not aware that any of the regular pos(t)ers here have got their hands on a micro coil set yet.

After rewiring my Parker Nitefly V1 guitar a few times, I discovered that I can hear a thump when I switch to the lead pickups (an L-200B and L-280B side by side with reversed polls on one). Incidentally, I have a 3 position switch to select either or both in parallel. It's a nice versatile setup. When height balanced together, it reminds me of an old Santana tone. I think the problem is that the Q-tone is sitting right next to the lead pickups and they amplify the sound of that coil when the switch sends a vibration through the pick guard, or when I tap on the pick guard. It only happens in the lead setting with significant gain, so it must be that, right? Time to rewire again, uhg. Moral of the story: mount your Q-tone away from the pickups.

I hadn't come across the 'special Esquire wiring' in this thread, am I just not looking hard enough? In any case I'm going to be using the EQ diagram that your Teles have had success with, bypassing the switch entirely (I won't even be putting one on the guitar) as it seemed the best way to get the most variation out of one pickup. As for a question of my own, have any of you Q-filter-ers out there experimented with the difference between audio taper and linear pots for Q-tone control? Or have any theories/comments on the subject? - Oh, also Rotellicaster, can you tell me what value pots you are using with your 'Wilde' pickups? Posts: 6 Thu, Jul 2, 2009 22:08:44	i've been reanding this thread many times but it's a bit difficult for me cause i'm not a tech and i don't speak english properly so.. i m waiting for a pair of a l 90 and a q filter to put in a shecter omen extreme... i have only one pot for volume and one pot for tone... i think i can use the filter for both pick ups from the same tone pot having the chance to on off the filter... and i'd wire the pick ups in series and parallel using the push pull of the volume... but as i said i m not a tech... is it possible to get some diagrams? thanks antonio
