The guitar in question is an '89 Charvel (one of the killer Japanese ones,: basswood body, rosewood fb, and Floyd Rose trem) and I'd like to get your take on what the crunchiest Bill Lawrence bridge pickup would be. The L-90 or something else.? Thanks!

The L-500L/XL would work great as well, but the L-90 is better fit for classic rock and will allow you to transition between the two with ease. The L-90 is more Judas Priest / Iron Maiden metal whereas the L-500 is more Pantera metal (given that's what Dimebag used) Is this a one pickup guitar? If so, may I suggest you replace the tone control with a Q-filter. It will make the guitar much more versatile and allow you to "tone it down" better than a traditional tone control. Posts: 6 Thu, Oct 30, 2008 13:02:12	1)For Dimebag, I think he was the wrong endorser for the 500XL, his sound IMO was one of the worst ever heard in the history of metal, personally I like very much the clarity of the L-500 and I consider it a very warm pickup, at least if you have a guitar plugged in a Vox AC-30. Anyway, last week I purchased a Gibson Flying V and I'm not 100% found with the 496/500 combo, so I may be needing another pair of BL pickups and if it would be possible to buy from the Lawrences this time I'd curious to try the L-90r/L-90XL combo... 2)As far as I recall in 1989 the Charvel model 1 was phased out, so it should have a HH or SSH configuration, but we'll see what the opener says. I love Charvels and I'm desperately looking for a cherryburst 750XL.

Can't say for the L90's I'm waiting for the one I bought this week, I really doubt that this pup is especially made for classic rock. For lead sound the L600L is surely better over the L500's for a high gain ( without the "single coilish" brilliance of the L500's which I like for certain apps). I can't wait to try the L90L, I really think it's gonna fit better than the L600 in my EVH style guitar.

Posts: 12 Wed, Dec 3, 2008 05:44:37	I've tried the L-90L, I've to confirm it's the crunchiest BL pup ever! More defined than the L-500. Becky told me the L-90 got more low end (than the L-500) and I 100% agree! It's weird, I always preferred the L-500's for moderate OD and I'm still thinking like this. I'd be curious to try the L-90XL for metal (especially lead sound) music! For the people who like how the pups are darkening (like me) when rolling back the volume the L-500 is better. It's almost magical how the L-90's are keeping their clarity when rolling back the volume though. I think that at full impedance (with Q-filter) the L-90 got more body than the L-500 but when rolling it back the L-500 stay more fat. It's funny how the L-90L can nail some old metallica (Kill 'em all). These are the best pups I ever heard!
