I'm getting the (possibly foolish) motivation to try to wire up/assemble some spare parts. I've seen some references to using shielded wire for longer
connections (e.g. output jack to controls). Now the question. Do I need to use a wire with a single inner conductor and braided outer wire (shield?) and just
wire the braid to ground regardless of whether the inner conductor is the signal or ground connection? Or is the foil wrapping typically seen in wires with 2-4
leads (e.g. a Dimarzio Humbucker) considered a shield? In this case, I would assume the "shield" would not be connected/grounded to anything. Fear
not the pickups in question are Bill & Becky not Dimarzio.

The shield must be connected to ground somewhere in order to have an effect. (Sometimes it is better to connect it at one end of the wire only.) The foil is
likely intended to be a shield, and hence it must be grounded; perhaps it's grounded internally to one of the other wires. The DiMarzio wiring instructions
should contain information on what to do with the foil.
To your first question: Technically, it's indeed the best solution to separate the "shield ground"and "signal ground" entities. They should be connected at one point only. Information on how to do some of this stuff can be found on guitarnuts.com. In practice, most people don't bother much about shielding and just solder all ground signals together. Some guitars, like semi-hollow axes, are not that easy to shield, while others, e.g Strats are relatively easy to work with. I shielded my Strat with copper paint a couple of years ago, and it's dead quiet. I admit I never shielded the wire that goes to the output jack.
