Posts: 1 Fri, Jun 19, 2009 15:17:39	Tags : None Hello All, This my first post here. I'm from Buffalo, NY where there is a happening blues scene. I've also been fortunate to visit the meccas of Lousiana, Mississipi and Texas Did I mention I luv tha Blues. I've been trying to get some info on Bill's pickups and have read a bunch of threads about the different characteristic and wiring options, filter etc. I hope y'all don't mind if I canvas for some help on setting up an axe. I have a orignal tele thinline that I made the mistake of replacing the original pickups with a set of EMG 85's way back in the '80s. Of course I lost the original pups (waaa!!) and I'd like to get back to a classic alnico pickup sound. I replaced the EMG's with some GFS fender style pick-ups that I picked up used from a poster on the TRDPI board and they are ok but I'd like to try something different. My fav 'bucker style tone is Clapton on the "Beano" and of course BB's clean sound Tab Benoit makes a thinline sing too. From what I've seen on the pick up descriptions the BL pups are versatile enough to get both sounds out of a bright guitar like a thinline. Anyone care to weigh in on pup choice and if I need a Q filter?

The obvious is, a set of reissues with the mods Mr. Lindy Fralin recommends. If you use 600 series, get the wider pole piece stance on the bridge. I've got 609s in a 2 HB Tele with the same spec bridge as you have - the pole pieces are a little narrow. ( I will change the bridge as soon as I have the $$ ). ++ You consider what comes out of Tab's guitar to be "singing"? That's a growl if I ever heard one. :^) Tab's doing a fun Pro-Louisiana TV spot for us right now which is getting airplay. ++ Bill's pickups are super well thought out - get the 4 lead versions; that won't hurt a thing. Then you can experiment with series and phase, etc.

Posts: 439 Sat, Jun 20, 2009 05:48:20 Contributing Silver Member	So far, my favorite tele neck bucker is the old Gibson superhumbucker c. 5-6 kOhm (note: some of them are 7-8 kOhm) that Bill designed for Gibson. A while back he re-issued the superhumbucker as the L80, but I see on the Wilde website that the L80 appears not to be included in his current line of pickups. That's a shame. It's a very versatile pickup - sweet cleans and also smooth when pushed a bit. Also matches real well with my L298TL. I prefer the original superhumbucker because of its chrome cover.

L-90, L-500 and L-600 have 4 leads plus shield, so these models can be wired in any way you like. I agree with gatguys comments about the L-80.

I meant, in general, no need to shy away from Bill's 4 lead versions. I was not recommending the 609s, just referring to the pole spacing choices to consider.

Hopefully I'm not oversimplfing this but my impression on the difference between the 609 / 610 combo and the L 90 is the L-90 has more of a humbucker sound and the L-609 / 610 is a P-90 tone. So if I was seeking a humbucker sound then the L-90 is more suited? Boris nice to hear from a homeboy, where are ya at now if you don't mind me asking. I moved away too for about 10 years but ended up coming back. Good comment about Tab, but I love that growl he gets. Would the L609 / 610 get me in the neighborhood?

The 609s are no Tab Benoit at all, IMO. They're more of your Reggie Young, I would say. I play primarily clean and I like a good microphone as opposed to a spicy filter. If that makes sense.

Thanks for mentioning Reggie Young, I remember reading an interview with him and had forgotten about it. I guess I'll do some searching here to see if I can find out more about the L-90 and how it sounds with the coils split. Good Luck in New Orleans, that is an exciting place. I remember hanging out in a small bar on Bourbon St. listining to a kid playing Son House and Charlie Patton. I was the only one listing to him play. I used to go there 2-3 times a year to visit friends but they moved. Do you ever go to Lafayette?

Posts: 10 Sun, Aug 23, 2009 18:27:12	Finally got the pickups and installed them. I ended up going for the standard L-609 set after talking to Becky a couple of times. She recomended them and when I told her I was looking for a P-90 vibe. Man, what an improvement over the old pickups. I can get great bass tone and the overall tone is very balanced. The old pickups bass was very muddy and I used to wonder if it was the amp because the low E was always fart'n out. I used to have to really tweak all tone controls on the guitar, amp and effects to get a decent tone. Now it is easy to get a good sound, just roll off a little treble and I'm happy. I'm going to get a set of the 610s for my semi hollow xavierre guitar I have set up for slide to see if they come closer to a P-90 tone. The only probem I ran into was the pickup mounting rings were too high. I left them out and mounted the pickups directly to the P.G. There is a little gap around the pickups but It seems to allow a little sound to escape from behind the pick guard so I might leave it that way. For the mounting rings to work, I'll have to take about a 1/8" off the thinkness because they were hitting the strings. Also Tab Benoit played in Buffalo 2 weeks ago, what a show! He tore up the Laffayette Tap Room here for 2 long sets. Got the chance to speak to him before he went on. He was hanging out with a cognac spreading the word on Gulf Coast post Katrina situation. He is working real hard to keep Washington from forgetting about how much is still needed there. It was a wonderful show and I'll definately look forward to the next time he comes to play. Anyway thanks for all the help and advice, I must say I'm a Bill and Becky convert, these are the best sounding pickups I've ever played. I also have a set of Keystones that are going into a Strat I'm building. Just waiting for the finish to cure before I can put it together.

Just reading the local music/art rag while eating a pizza with sauce (that was too sweet) in the old City of Tonawanda. The place I loved in North Tonawanda is now a Mexican Restaurant, and not a good one. I came back to New Orleans, only to find that Redd Volkaert had played up there on July 31. I was in North Tonawanda (family shindig) on the 31st - I promise I'd have stole away for a few hours if I had only known. Now they tell me Buffalo Wings did get started (in 1964-5) before I left, but I promise they were not well known, because I hadn't heard of them and didn't until I went back in the 1980s. Good Luck with Terrell Owens. I hope Ralph Miller knows what he is doing. :^) Congrats on those 609s.

Never been to Oswego but I would like to take a trip along the scenic route that follows the Lake Ontario shoreline one of these days, thanks for the heads up cuz I likes to eat!
