Posts: 1 Thu, Jul 2, 2009 03:44:39	Tags : None OK, I play mostly red dirtish country with a huge rock edge to it. Hendrix meets Paisley with a touch of Slash. So, I'm looking to add some BLs to my tele that has a humbucker in the neck. This is what I'm looking for in the neck. Something FULL, rich and balanced, but with a unique "I've never heard THAT in a tele!" sound to it. Obviously no muddiness or lack of focus to the pickup, but I do NOT want a piercing overly-focused sound. Think tight yet big. I know these are kinda subjective terms, but I'm looking for something new and alive and full and hearty! For the bridge, I want something raw! RAW and ballsy. Like a doberman's bark. I don't need a tame twang-machine here. I want some of that iconic tele bridge, but some of that roar to it. OPEN, raw, biting! Thanks for ANY recommendations you guys have. Thanks a ton! PN

As for the humbucker, there was recently quite a bit of discussion about humbuckers for tele on this thread: http://www.guitarsbyfender.yuku.com/topic/10189 I'd say you should consider whether looks (e.g. blades, poles, chrome cover) matter and whether you want a humbucker, P90 or single coil type response and dynamic. Unfortunately, I really wanted a chrome bucker in the neck and Bill doesn't do chrome-clad humbuckers anymore, and so I had to go with a vintage superhumbucker (c. 5 kOhm), which he designed and Gibson produced back in the 70s, in the neck. I love it. It's not too hot and so it still sounds a lot like a tele when clean, but it's got some smooth PAF character to it when overdriven (however, not muddy at all in my setup). Also balances real well with the L298TL. If you don't care if your bucker has blades, I'd go for an L500R or and L90 for the neck. The L500 is Bill's version of full on humbucker heaven, whereas the L90 leans a bit more towards a P90 tonally (mids are a bit more pronounced), but has all the output of a humbucker. If you prefer the sound and response of a P90, there's the L609 and L610, which are discussed at length in the thread linked above. I hope that helps.

Posts: 552 Fri, Jul 3, 2009 10:34:08 Bronze Member	the q filter was my idea to, its such a cool device. if in the BL range there is no single coil size (big mouth) pickup you could try to find a ultrasonic. a design that had bill ideas in it when he worked together with samson. i once had a set and they are hot (but see you get the one's with the big U on the pup)

To my knowledge, that one has been discontinued for a couple years now. The L-298TL is its replacement, though not quite as aggressive of a pickup based on what I've read. As an aside, I had my first band practice with my Tele through my complete rig at proper volume Tuesday night. It totally ruled for the rock covers we do. It owned the other guitarist's Les Paul. Most surprising to me was how useful the tone control was. With a .022 cap, it was useful throughout the entire range on both pickups. I got a surprisingly convincing "Woman Tone" out of the 610 with the tone all the way down; not muddy at all. --Garrett--

In combination with a Q-filter, it's very versatile. If you're looking for twang, look elsewhere unless you intend to use the filter. Superb pickup for rock. The 290TL has a little less mid emphasis and more top end, but it's still a fairly hot pickup compared to the L-280TL. The L-298TL has the output of an L-290TL, but despite this, it's got a more typical tele-like response with solid mids and good high end. IMO, it's currently Bill and Beckys best and most versatile of the L-29x models.

It'd be nice if the man himself could put together a concise list of current pickup offerings and 1) the idea/goal of the design and 2) it's tonal characteristics. I know Bill goes for well balanced and articulate, but there's got to be a reason for the vast variety of pickups he makes. FWIW, My 298 sounds p90ish to my ears, but with a little twang... but, then again, I don't have a ton of experience playing P90s. -Tom
