you see, what worries me about complicated schemes, is that in using many wires and so forth i may end up actually loosing the natural sound qualities of the pups,just to get an extra sound;
From the diagram, you can see you'll lose nothing. The "regular" three options are there plus a couple extra cool ones. The "extra wires/components" are out of the circuit when selecting the three basic sounds, so nothing is changed.

to use the Q-filter with Bill's 5 way for Tele: do you just connect it to the tone control as normally??
You have a few options.

1) If you simply connect it to the tone control, then you will be replacing the tone control with whichever wiring setup of the Q-filter you choose.

2) If you set it up on the tone control with a push-pull pot, then the that knob can be either a tone control or a Q-filter control depending on you choice at the time. Of course, a push-push will work just as well, as will a simple mini-toggle. The bottom line is the ability to choose between the Q and the tone.

3) If you don't want a switch, don't want to have to choose back and forth and don't want an extra knob, you can opt for a stacked pot and do Q and tone at the same time.

These 3 choices boil down to Q-filter...
