I also have a theory about why there arent more female players. Bear with me.

To be able to play in front of a crowd you need to be pretty good at your instrument. How do you get good? Practice! Lots of it. Several long, lonesome hours sitting in your room honing your skills.
It is my belief that women in general are more social creatures than men. When they do something it is not so much about the actual activity but more about the social interaction.

Men, on the other hand, are more interested in achievements (they measure success by achievements) and the "functioning unit". Men love to see a group of people working together like a well oiled machine (like a band or sports team).

This plays a big role in why women dont play. They tend not to sit alone in their rooms practising because they are more concerned about the "social bonding" between people.
