It's a bit of a simplistic generalisation, and might explain some disparity of numbers. But, before rock n roll, there were a much higher percentage of women musicians. And, youll find many more men socialising down the pub every night than women.

IMO, its got most to do with greater conformity amongst women, the birth control pill, and changing socio-economics.

FWICS, in these days of increasing opportunities - especially for women - women are generally increasingly more focussed than men on being able to be financially independent and secure. They used to marry for lifestyle and security, whereas now most women want to be able to provide the security and lifestyle they want independently of a man. You see this in their overall better academic performance, and with female graduates in many Western nations outnumbering male graduates by around 2:1, youll start seeing them take over the professions. Generally, I think carving out a career takes greater effort for women than for men.

So, this takes care of younger women.

Next, when women get married and have children, they generally have far fewer free hours than men, as their primary focus becomes the family.

So, that takes care of older women.

And, if you look back historically, many middle and upper class women have had the opportunity to engage in artistic pursuits, but yet theres a *huge* disparity of such achievements between women and men, and there still is, and IMO, there always will be.

Youll also see that more men suffer from unemployment than women, especially long-term unemployment, and while women are being encouraged to do more and more, and have more and more safety nets, the consequence is fewer opportunities for men.

Whereas women tend to conform more and are therefore more easily manipulated and helped, which is why they are less likely to personally suffer long-term unemployment, and feel completely ostracized, etc. Youll also see women that break the mould oft ostracized by other women.

In times of adversity, men gravitate towards sport and hobbies, etc. And, out of a mans despair, he often ends up feeling isolated from society, which often results in thinking outside the square, which sometimes leads to new discoveries, inventions, art, literature, and music.

And, we should all be able to see that much of the worlds greatest music throughout the ages has come from adversity.

The upside for women in the West right now is more safety nets, and less likelihood of being a member of mercilessly cruel down and out class. Men are still largely expected not to need help, and the price tag for the little help that is available for them is often too great for many men to stomach.

Men and women are wired up differently, and no matter how socio-economically equal men and women become, nature dictates our focus. Of course, its very complex and Im generalizing, and theres a lot of overlap between the sexes, and there will always be women that achieve big things. But, IMO nature dictates that the number of women credited with leading achievements will always be significantly fewer than men.

Man, youd have to write much more in depth and breadth to do justice to such a topic, and the ways in which men and women often achieve in different ways.
