I'm not sure of the exact color you're trying to achieve.

I had to add a tiny amount of blue to my bright red water-based dye when I did my first maple-topped Tele to get the color "right". To me, without the blue, the color was sort of like you describe: too much pink or even fuschia all by itself on maple.

If you have some scraps, it's easy to mix up a small batch of red dye and then add VERY SMALL amounts (talking drops here) of blue to it until you get something you like.

The first two pictures in the third row (Tele 1) of this gallery show the fron of the guitar I'm talking about. FWIW, the third on in that row shows the mahogany back with pure bright red dye (no blue). The mahogany needed no blue to look good - only the maple did.
