Hello Ruin13:

If you really want to investigate the usage of "real" gunstock and wax finishes and their respective techniques for application I suggest you take a look at the following web links:

www.chambersgunmakers.co.uk/ultra.htm
www.huntamerica.com/linspeed/
www.fisherharps.com/finishes.htm
falcon.jmu.edu/~dehartcg/finish.htm
www.birchwoodcasey.com/sp...asp?menu=8

I am interested in these finishes too, as a builder and player, but am concerned about protection and longevity. There is little long term stabilization provided by an oil finish, but some woods should be tolerant of this. I have had the the best luck with light nitrocellulose finishes, just my preference. I also know that under significant temperature variations, some oil finishes can go form exceptionally nice and smooth to "crappy and sticky" I would be interested in Tommy's opinion on these types of finishes, and their long term effect on neck performance. As always YMMV, and it is one of the ever present guitar tradeoffs.

Regards,
Pat
