The pup configurations sometimes vary on early JVs, but are from late 70s/early 80s US Fender production. Reported configurations include: a set of 1982 grey-base date-stamped US pups incl. wiring harness; 1982 grey-base date-stamped US pups; 1982 red-base date-stamped US pups; a set of 3 late 70s X-1 pups; 79-81 pups; mixtures.

JV (big Squier logo) Strat pups appear essentially identical on 57 and 62 Ris, usually being of late 70s/early 80s generic US Fender production, with black-fibre bases (often with white pencil marks across), lacquered pole pieces, and countersunk mounting screws, but 57Ris frequently have plastic covered wires, whereas 62Ris nearly always have cloth covered wires and sometimes have a yellow pencil mark across the base.

Squier JV 52Ri Tele pups always seem to have cloth covered wires.

First issue SQs had fibre-base pups, while second and third issue SQs had plastic slot-base pups.
