I shouldn't have referred to nodes, I guess, but on Bill's DVD he mentions something about how close they are together no matter where you play on the fretboard.
Anyway, what I wanted to say was that on the early Fenders the point was to get MORE BASS out of the bass strings and MORE TREBLE out of the treble strings. When you listen to a lap-steel played clean through a tweed Deluxe (which was a big amp at that time) your hear that cutting treble Leo Fender was after.
