Actually, there's not really that much difference between Bill's L-500-sized HBs and the standard HB. They're just a tad narrower, and even that difference is halved between the front (neck side) and rear (bridge side) of the pickups. You end up with a tiny little gap which is not terribly noticeable.

From the sticky post on top of this page, you can see the differences:
Gibson humbucker = 1.50" Width x 2.75" Length
Bill Lawrence L-500 humbucker = 1.350" Width x 2.80" Length

The lenght is utterly negligible at 0.05". The width difference is only 0.150". This amounts to 0.075" per side. That's not even double the thickness of a typical low E string.

For years, many people have used L-500s in guitars designed for standard HBs with no terrible problems.
