I agree with the others in recommend the L49x sets, and nocasters 450 in the neck suggestion. I imagine most of us are assuming what you don't like about the neck pickup is a lack of definition and an abundance of mud, which is what PAF style pickups tend to give out, especially in the neck position. An L490 would be almost bordering on chimey in such a guitar I would think...which is what a lot of us would love, but if this individual isn't wanting to deviate too far from the Gibson sound, perhaps a 450 or a 495 in the neck instead would be better, for a fatter sound, but still much cleaner and clearer than the stock Epi PAF.

Although, the lazy part of me asks, why couldn't you just take the old pickups out, snip the leads AT the pickup, and resolder the new pickups in with some shrink wrap? that would save you a lot of trouble, although it certainly isn't the cleanest or most proper method.
