New to the forum,
Great information! I have read that the L-280 is hard to set up and may not sound good depending on the guitar also. Here is my setup: MIM 60th Aniversary strat, alder body, maple neck, tex mex pu's. I would like to go HSS. I have a SD JB for the bridge and would like to use L-280S's in the middle and neck. Comments or suggestions and setup ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Hi Studs, and welcome!
The L-280 is not hard to set up, but it's height sensitive and usually adjusts closer to the strings than most other brands. Go by your ears. When it sounds right to you, it is good.
Bad sounds are rarely caused by the pickups, but bad musicians with sloppy skills will often put the blame on other links in the tone chain for their own shortcomings image
The JB is very midrange heavy compared with the L-280, though, so there's a good chance you'll have to adjust your amp a bit to nail your sounds.
