Hmmm...I remember seeing ads for L6-S's back around 1975 in Guitar Player magazine, and they always pictured a natural maple body, and I want to say maple neck with maple board. I almost bought one in 1975 from a music store near Chicago in 1975 after seeing a guy playing one in a bar one night, it seemed like a VERY versatile guitar, at least the way he played it. But then I found a 1966 Les Paul standard Goldtop for $350 and bought that instead. Anyway, I thought the L6-S's were pretty decent guitars and not all that expensive.

If you are looking for a nice piece of wood, call Tommy at USACG. Superb quality, reasonable prices, and the nicest guy around.

As Nocaster and others have pointed out, you cannot build a quality guitar cheaper than you can buy a decent one, but you can get just what you want that way.
