A pitch shifter adds or digitally generates a note, sometimes more than one, a specified interval higher or lower to the original note. Some shifters will let you mix the original note signal with the digitally generated (shifted) note, to do harmonies and the like. Most pitch shifters can operate as an octave pedal by adding a note an octave or more, higher or lower to the original signal. An octave pedal generally only provides one or two notes a specified octave higher or lower to the original note, and cannot add say 3rds or 5ths.

Posts: 8 Thu, Jan 22, 2009 17:46:48	The octave pedals I've used (Boss and DOD stomp boxes) do not digitally emulate the sound being input. Instead they generate a synthesized tone one or two octaves below the input tone. So playing a guitar into it doesn't sound like a bass guitar - it sounds like a synth bass. Playing a trombone into it doesn't sound like a tuba - it sounds like the same synth bass. Singing into it won't make you sound like Paul Robeson... you get the idea. I'm not sure how the pitch shifter you're referring to works, but I had an outboard MXR box for a while called a "Pitch Shift Doubler." It mixed the input sound with upper or lower copies of the input, sometimes with pitch modualtion, so that it worked kind of like a flanger. Somewhere around here I have a demo recording. I'll see if I can find it.
