Palladium Charter Member Czech Master of Rock Guitar	Tags : None So my wife has decided (after a visit to one of her relatives) it is time for me to change my acoustic for a better / newer one (if I sell the one I have now). Now I am starting to look around for something that would be fun to play (so no 12 gauge strings anymore) jumbo shaped, cutaway welcome.(something as loud but smaller than a dreadnought) the market is full of Stagg, James Neligan, Taylor and Art and Luthrie besides Yamaha and Epiphone.... In the fied of 400 € / 500 $ what would you recommend to look for or stay clear off? Any special tips of what to try? I doubt that the given budget (which I rather not exceed twice as i did with watch ) would allow me to have a custom build instrument.

Posts: 1722 Tue, Jan 27, 2009 07:50:42 Contributing Silver Member	Jumbos might be larger that dreadnoughts. So I go for OOO-size now (also known as folk size, or grand auditorium). No lights, I guess that means you want scalloped bracing for a really lively instrument... Stagg, Dean or Cort are not really acoustic makes (in my book), so I'd skip those. Yamahas and Ibanezes I've always considered good sturdy beginner makes, but never great in sound. But the all solid Yamahas I tried a few months ago were actually good sounding things, the LS16-series... but I think those are like 600-700EUR. Taylors I don't really trust anymore. They were my dream guitar once (314CE, 414CE), but the sound and playability aren't that hot anymore, it seems. Or maybe I've changed. Yet to try the GA3, which is reasonably priced. I'd try to find a Czech make second hand. Really loved some I've played (Furch, Stanford etc). I myself actually bought a Epiphone masterbilt online. But yet to receive it. Or something from Takamine, like the EG220 Sc, any experience with them? As for epiphone I would be lookig for EJ200 - but those are probalbyl plywood tops or AJ100, or the 00 model. Also chcecked the Furch ones, there are some - in the Durango series in my crosshair level. Last ones I have looked at are those (slovak made tops - bodies assembled in Korea) : http://www.dowina.eu/Dowina.pdf I´d be looking at the Vintage Chardonnay Jumbo (JCE) Checked with the luthiers, masterbuilt pieces are over my budget and over my scope of use - and I would not dare to take the guitar anyway then. Palladium Charter Member Czech Master of Rock Guitar	So I did my homework, compared spec and prices and here is my top 10 selection - sorted by street price ascending: Takamine EG440SC Fender Sonoran SCE Custom Fender GDC200 SCE EPIPHONE AJ-200SCE VSB Furch S 40 CM cutaway Takamine EG460SC Takamine EG540SSC Art & Lutherie Folk CW Washburn F32SCENS Dowina JCE 555 Fender Malibu SCE Upgraded Fender KINGMAN SCE Now I really do not know what the difference between the Fenders is, and I have checked their website twice. If anyone from you guys has any expereience with the a.m. guitars, any advice would be welcome.

Oh she is doing fine, she has learnt to hide behind pillows and has agreat fun, also showing how big she is and that kidn of stuff. And I am affraid that once she will start to walk her bro will have a hard time, as one can see it in her eyes how she wants to run and bounce around and riase hell I am about to try the Furch in their Prague store sometime between work and hospital next week. The only thing that worries me now is the nut width (45mm) http://www.furch.cz/eng/furchdurango/rada40.php in jumbo shape with cutaway. I have seen and tested the Dowina' s and was not immpressed much - felt too bulky and one could feel the frets all the way on the side of the neck. But I will trz in another store, might be just a wrong piece. Have not yet tried the Washburn or Takamine. But I did try this one today: http://www.artandlutherieguitars.com/folkcwcedarantbst.html Among all the others I had in my hands in the shop (Ibanezes, Epiphone Performer and Aria), this one was so far for me the nicest - very simple, nt overloaded with abalone inlays and had a sweet warm "voice". Definitely one to be kept in the next rounds. the guy at the store did not recommend the acoustic Fenders.

The first years - when you see development from day to day - is a wonderful time. My oldest son is 21. Those years have passed by so quickly, it's almost scary. I suppose that's what's called 'life' Regarding guitars, the second most important thing in life, I wouldn't worry too much about nut width. I've got a Lowden S-25 with fat neck as well as a 45mm nut. Even with my small hands and laughingly short fingers, its playability is superb. Try as many guitars as you possibly can, Johnny. I've tried a number of Furches, and while every single one have been great guitars with first class build quality, they differed quite a bit sound-wise. Not good or bad, just different tones. Protruding fret ends is a common problem affecting lots of new guitars during wintertime when heating dries out air humidity. However, it's an easy fix which every good luthier should be able to repair in a matter of minutes. Takamines usually have very comfortable necks. That goes for Washburn, too. A couple of Washburn models (WSJ124K a.o.) have fairly deep necks with very V-shaped profile. While I find these very comfortable, others hate them. Guitars from the Godin family tree usually represent great bang for the buck. Despite their quality craftsmanship and good tone, many of them have too slim necks for my liking. Liked some, hated others, some I just do not know.... have decided not to go with the washburn as it was a shallow body and the acoustic sound was not that good. Takamines of the types I wanted to try are not available at the market at all here and the distributor did not answer any of my request if it is possible to get them over. Tried other few Dowina's and while the sound was very good there were again details that made me to get them out of the list - drops of glue, bubles in lacquer etc. Found out that I really am lazy and decided for narrow neck. But I did go to the Furch dealer and that was a thing I should not have done The guy at the shop was great and the guitars were the best sounding in the whole lot I have tried. What really surpirsed me that the models I was looking for - Supejumbos D40 a D41, that only differ in decoration (rosette circle and binidng) + lacquer - stain vs gloss had so different sound. The satin ones were a bit harsh but verz colourful, where the high gloss ones had a somehow sweeter and more round or cultivated tone. I was also forced to some of the higher level instruments -vintage bluegrass and millenium and these were also awesome... So in my little competition there is the Furch D41 S - to be delivered with a modified (43mm) neck in a 2 months time for me to try and decide - no obligation to purchase - a great shop that one, once I felt again as A customer. And there aslo is simila kind of deal at the other shop that sells Art and Lutherie, the cutaway model is on its way. this just to let you know

I too really liked the A&L I had, but as it was purely fingerpicking guitar, I sold it (well, I did get 10€ for playing it for two years). My Epiphone still hasn't arrived. The tone is superb nad the finish and craftmanship just flawless. Also got a tip how to keep enough humidity in winter season when the heating is on. Just put a few peeled orange skins into the case - the guitar takes as much as it needs and it smells well, at no costs virtually.
