How did the SRV asymetrical profile come about?

Posts: 4 Wed, May 27, 2009 16:23:39	Tags : None How did the SRV neck on number one end up with an asymetrical contour? Did it? I've never read anything from his guitar techs that said it was asymetrical. I believe Renee Martinez said it was the biggest/fattest neck Fender made, but I've seen nothing from them stating the profile was asymetrical. I have seen it described as a C and also described as a D shape. Assuming that it was an asymetrical profile, how did it come to be asymetrical. Was it made that way? Or, did somebody modifiy it by sanding off on the high e side of the back? And, if so, what was the reasoning behind it?

Posts: 163 Wed, May 27, 2009 21:54:53	I don't doubt Renee Martinez but the SRV Artist series guitars have necks that are far from being the biggest neck Fender ever made. Was # 1 asymetrical? To a degree they all were back then, the way they were formed by hand. The guys shaping the necks probably start off the week relying more heavily on their templates, etc., but as the week goes along you're just using muscle memory. When I reshape a USACG Tele headstock to pass for a Fender one, at some point I'm just following a path I've been down enough times before - if one turns out a little different than the others, I don't mind. And so it was with Fender necks when built back then and many many were reshaped any time a refinish was in order. The reasoning is, everyone's hand is different; everyone's style of play is different and you wanna create something that is a little more comfortable, but still substantial in size and girth.

I'd assume that it's just something that Stevie liked, so they included that feature in his signature model. --Garrett--

Posts: 5 Sun, Jun 7, 2009 15:02:11	Right on Garrett. My understanding is that the neck on the signature model is nothing like SRV's neck. His didn't use pau ferro. He used Brazillian Rosewood and it was veneer. The radius was supposedly 7 1/2 but after several refrets became a 9 12 to 10. I have tried several signatures. Some had thin necks, others had beefier necks. Shapes felt different from guitar to guitar.
