Mahogany body, ash lam top. Need advice on grainfillers, the product must take water-based stain.
Side note: Can you stain spalted maple with w/b or is it too punky? Thanks |

Stain won't take to spalted maple nor any other guitar quality maple. You'd have to use an aniline dye instead.
Likewise on the body; use an aniline dye, then grain filler (Bartley's) tinted to match, probably multiple grain fill sessions; sand down and re-dye once the ash and mahogany pores are filled smooth. I wish I could recommend any of the water based fillers. Not yet; another 5 years. I prefer to use toners, once I know the finish is level and smooth, rather than dyes, for better color modulation, but I am not usually looking for "Grain or figure pop". |

Oh. I rather liked the vivid water-based stain on the ash Tele I did.
I'm starting the Strat now, but unlike the Tele I do want the grain filled. Looks like it will be a mahogany body with a wild swamp ash top. I have a color scheme I'm wanting to do incorporating the grain pattern. The water based stains with Tru-Oil over seem to work similar to automotive base coat / clear coat systems in that you get a real vibrant color, but you really can't tell the true tone until it's coated :-D
