I have an old peavey tracer with a hum single single configuration, I was wondering what you guys had to say about a l-500 in the bridge and a l-45 in the
neck. Then I could wire it to just use two pickups (i'm not a fan of the middle pickup idea). Any advice is appreciated I'm new to Bill's pickups
and guitar modding/building in general, thanks!

Welcome!!!!!
First question: What type of music are you going to play? Heavy, Classic Rock, Jazz? That will make a big difference in what everyone suggests. I would suggest that you consider going with a 3 pickup combo, especially since you don't have a humbucker in the neck position. I say that b/c you can get some GREAT sounds when you put BLs in parallel with one another. A neck pup and a middle pup sound awesome together. It will also give you a lot more tonal options. Better to have more than enough than not enough. It will also help ease the volume difference between position 1 and position 5 on the switch. Otherwise, the L-500 L or L-500 R will be your best bet. But, your answer to the first question will help narrow that down. Again, welcome!!! And good choice for pickups! Once you go BL, you'll never look back
I like pie...

I have an older Peavey Tracer also but mine is just a HB in bridge in single in neck position. I like mostly classic rock, early metal and blues and am considering an L-90 & L-45 combination when I get the cash together. From what I have read on here, I think I would like the L-90 better than the L-500. I'm really becoming a fan of those older Peavey guitars - USA made, good quality construction, good wood, cost next to nothing (less than $100 each for both of the ones I have) and with some electronics changes they are fantastic in my opinion, especially for the price. I put Keystone singles in my Predator (strat copy) and for just over $100 total outlay (guitar and PUPs) I have a really sweet-sounding guitar. |

How do you like the Keystones? Are they quieter than the original single coils, and how is the bridge pick-up as far as the dreaded ice-pickitis?

The Keystone bridge pickup is not plagued with the usually thin high end response. The set is very nice balanced.
Due to Bills improved coil design, they're much more immune to hum than other single coils. If noise pickup is a concern, I'd go for an L-45. IMHO, they're unsurpassed both in terms of tone and hum-immunity. Regarding US made Peavey instruments - both basses and guitars, possibly with the exception of the EVH - they are shamefully underrated. |

I like the Keystones. The bridge is a little bright but this guitar currently has 500K pots in it which I am going to change for 250K ones which I think will
be perfect. I just threw these in there without changing any of the stock electronics which is my next project for this guitar - new pots, switch and wiring.
