I scored a nice lightweight mahogany T off the web specials that I'm anxious to start finishing. For you more experienced guys, what do I do about the
string ferrule holes on the back? It seems like they would fill up with grain filler and clearcoat. Should I mask these off somehow or leave them open and
just clean them out as I go along? One thing I thought of was putting wax in them so finish materials don't stick. My son has some wax for his
orthodontics that may do nicely. Does that sound like a good idea?

Spackle
Dries fast. Doesn't split like drywall compound. Easy to remove. Wax will work but if it gets into the mahogany it may inhibit adhesion of your finish. I usually get grain filler in there (I'd hate to get spackle into the pores in the ash) and that's usually sufficient. I have a habit to keeping the ferrule holes open as I go. Just a strange habit. |

Thanks, Boris. That's a good idea, and I probably have two or three varieties of spakle-type products in my garage I can test out.
