I voted for 2x. A nice 2x12" combo (Fender Twin, Boogie Trem-o-verb, etc.) will give you all you need. I've always thought half stacks and full stacks were ridiculous overkill. Besides, if you need more volume, just mic one of the speakers.
In addition, to make things perfect, a nice 10" and 12" combo can really fill out the sound as long as the speakers are matched fairly well (sensitivity - don't want one putting out 101 dB while the other is only 96 dB). |

...since I've owned three different ('65, '68, '69) Fender Super Reverb-Amps over the years, I'd have to (obvisouly) cast mt vote for 4 x 10" speakers!
