Mahogany bodied Strat anyone?? |
Lead | ||
|
I was looking at the Andy Timmons signature guitar and noticed a HSS mahogany bodied Strat that really intrigues me. Has anyone here had any luck at putting one together?? Maybe even with a lam maple top?? I love Strats but cannot seem to be able to find one to my liking and I've been looking for 30 years! I want to build my first guitar and this one I think is the one. I have a PRS Custom 22 and a killer CS.51 Nocaster that is a major killer guitar, thats what I'm trying to base a Strat on thats as good as it is both in the vintage play and feel dept.. The mahogany bodied Strat sounds like a great "in between" guitar for the PRS/Strat guy......I play Worship music and it would be primarily for that purpose only. I am looking at a HSS set up as well......or even a HSH set up...THANKS!

Personally, I think an alder Strat is the perfect guitar for going in between a Tele and a PRS. This is my arrangement.
I haven't heard a mahogany Strat myself, but I understand it delivers pretty typical Strat sound, but a bit warmer sounding. I would expect a Strat with mahogany body, maple cap, maple neck with rosewood board, and HSS to be super versatile. This spec would be similar to a lot of high end guitars like Anderson and Suhr. It won't sound like a traditional Strat, though, it that's what you're after. --Garrett--

Thanks for yer input. I'm not going for a traditional Strat sound at all per say.......just a super versitile one that crosses into other tonal pathways. I am even looking at a HSH set up but might not want too many bells n whistles to fiddle with ( coil taps etc.) . I might not put the maple cap on but am just looking at what others may have done in this area that might be a proven set up with good results. Bring it on!!

I have decided to go with a HSS pickup configuration and possibly the new Wilkinson vintage trem bridge. I will also get the body with a maple top as to give it back some higher frequencies.. I know this has had to be done before.....

The Wilkinson vintage style is a fantastic bridge. I got the 5+1 version that WD Music has and it blows the Fender vintage bridge away.
If I could only have one guitar, it would be an H/S/S Strat. --Garrett--

I agree. The HSS is the most useful pickup config IMO. Paired with a Strat body and a good trem, you cannot go wrong.
You can say you to me.

Mahogany strat bodies, all other things being equal, start with the bridge pickup sounding about the same as a normal one and get warmer (lose definition, muddier, woolier, whatever) as you move towards the neck pickup.
I personally like alder for all kinds of strats - it's just such an even responding wood with no vices or tricks. Rusty. |

I'm a newbie here, but not to guitars. I'm a life-long acoustic player (40 years, Martin D-18) and more recently (last 20 years off and on) an electric player.
First let me give you a little history as background for my following comment on Strat body material. My first electric was a piece of junk, but the amp a beauty; a Jazz Chorus 55. Second guitar a really sweet Ibanez RG600, active twin HB pups, Basswood body (since stolen, grrrr...). Then a Raven 100Q (read, Korean, Poplar body, HSH), a nice enough guitar and kind of neutral in tone. I too had searched for a Strat I liked for 20 years without success. Then I auditioned a Highway One (3) SC one and had to have it. Put it on layaway for what seemed forever... and finally got it. I loved it. It was awesome. Notice... past tense. Yes, it too was ripped off. But... the balance of the Alder with the three SC's was perfect for me for a great deal. I too was looking for the Les Paul sound. I decided the LP was way too expensive and not all that much better than some others, notably the LP Double Cut, which imho, was a much sweeter guitar still capable of the harder, deeper sound of the LP. For even less money, the Godin LP P90 is awesome at $600 (notice the price, almost the same as the Highway One... imho... a good price target for an "acceptable" off the shelf guitar. Also, the Gibson Faded SG was a very credible sound. So... what material? For a "true" Strat, imho... NO doubt, Alder, with a Maple neck. For the LP sound, no doubt, Mahogony, with a Mahogony neck. For something in between, as you are suggesting, a mahogony body with some harder woods to mellow it to a neutral sound. I've done a lot of "research" and that seems like a valid way... Mahogony body, Maple neck and other small changes to get to that neutral sound. My "final" thought... one of each. That's "only" three guitars. Sorry, didn't mean to ramble. That's my ten cents. PS: Why limit yourself to a Strat shape, unless of course that's your fav. The wolfpack would make a nice looking mahogony body. |

Howdy,
I'm very happy with my flamed Mahogany Tele from USACG. It has a "tummy cut", Maple neck w/ RW board and is finished in Tung oil. I selected DiMarzio Twang Kings for vintage style tone. Great sounding guitar. Plays like a dream, but weighs in at 9 lbs. Ugh. I'm a big fan of Tommy and USACG. Larry |
