After a couple Teles and a Strat, I want to build another guitar. The new guitar will be for jazz. I am thinking about ordering a rear-routed, hollow T with two humbucker slots.
I need help deciding on the wood. Tone is much more important to me than looks. The challenge seems to be how to keep the low end clear and at the same time have the high end sound full without being too thin.
I am considering swamp ash topped with redwood or mahogany, mahogany topped with mahogany, mahogany topped with maple, and mahogany topped with swamp ash. No f-hole.
If you haven't heard/seen Jim Soloway's Swan series of guitars you should. His guitar design has a 27" scale neck bolted to a guitar similar to a USAGC hollow strat in swamp ash. Many of his sound clips match the tone I am looking for, but I can't justify spending near as much as his guitars cost, and I don't really want a 27" scale neck. The clips of two of his guitars - redwood over swamp ash and mahogany over swamp ash - come closest to what I want. I am concerned that the swamp ash may generate too much low note bloom.
What do you think?
FYI: I go by "Balladeer" on the Telecaster Discussion Forum, but that name was already taken on the E-Z boards.
