A couple of years ago, I bought a used red Peavey Reactor tele-copy for the equivalent of US$200. I could see the potential

Body:
I stripped off the thick, bright red paint, cleaned up the neck pocket, sanded the heel of the neck down a wee bit to get the angle of attachment just right, stained it walnut brown (so it looks a bit like a rosewood tele), rubbed in some beeswax+danish oil (feels and smells real nice now).

Electronics:
I tried a set of Fender SCNs and they sounded nicer than the overwound stock pups. But she really came into her own when I routed out the neck pickup cavity, cut a new pickguard, and installed a L600N16 and L298TL. I also installed a 5-way slector switch and wired it ala Bill's 5-way tele wiring (however I decided to wire position 5 as an off switch). These pups do not go out of phase like the SCNs did, but I don't miss that much.

This is now, without question, my favourite guitar. I hardly play any other.

I did the pups myself. They pop right in. No need for a luthier. Just desolder the old EMGs and solder the BL's the same way (I could help you with wire colour code). That's all I did. They sound fantastic and it's especially cool that the spotlights already have a series/parallel switch!
