Maybe if I was a better player, I would have left the fretboard plain. At my level, I need them to figure out where the heck my fingers are. Honestly, I don't know the henry value of the pickups. I explained to Becky what style of music I liked and asked for something that would work well with that. She matched the p'ups for balance. Found an email from Becky. The L-90 is a 4 Henry model. Nice shape, stunning wood, sleek neck joint, cool inlays, awesome pickups and pickup combination! What sort of switching have you got in it? What is the scale length? What sort of tonal properties does Leopard wood have? I was thinking of trying those very pups in my Steinberger GM5T (which has a slanted single coil at the neck). What type(s) of music did Becky recommend that configuration for? How does it sound? Finally, is it a he or a she? Without the benefit of picking it up, it seems kinda androgynous to me

Posts: 13 Thu, Jan 22, 2009 03:24:11	Hi Gatguy, Thank you very much. The other guitar I built was 23 years ago, so this is like the first time all over again. I bought some pearl dots from Stew/Mac, but just couldn't bring myself to install them. Since I've never done inlays, I wanted to keep the design simple, no flowing rose vines for me. Electronics: Front sw: phase for the L-45. Middle sw: 3-way p'up select. Rear sw: Series/split/parallel for the L-90. Concentric pots for tone and volume. Phasing the pickups has a thinning effect that I'm not sure I'm wild about. I've been thinking maybe putting a small cap from ground to the out-of-phase hot on that switch. The jumper wire would need to be changed to a diode to keep the cap from effecting the in-phase sound. Not sure it will work, but that's half the fun. Fretboard is from Stew/Mac, their 25½" strat scale with compound radius. I'd guess the tonal quality of the Leopardwood is similar to mahogany, but I'm really no expert. It had a nice ring to it when I thwacked it with my finger. I lean towards rock music, so I have the gain up. The pickups sound great clean too. I had to back the treble and mid back a bit on the amp from the old Duncan's I have on my other guitar. The guitar is pretty heavy, not dainty (I don't stand on stage with it). If I was pushed, it'd be a he. But not a dude.

I agree with your opinion of phasing. I have it on the L6-S that I own. It's sometimes useful with distortion but I don't miss it on my other guitars. You mentioned that the neck profile is taking some getting used to. What did you go with? I really like the neck-single/bridge-humbucker configuration. Simple, and it's the best of both classic Gibson and Fender designs. Those pickups must sound fantastic in that guitar, especially if the tonewood is similar to mahogany.

Posts: 14 Fri, Jan 23, 2009 05:39:43	It is a neck-through design, cut out of a big 'ole plank. I used my other guitar neck as a guide, but was a little shy to remove too much material. There's no going back that way. I had never used a draw knife before this project and I had issues with gouging.

I just got my l45s for a Washburn 400 (strat tyle). The 400 was a HSS but I'm making a new pickguard SSS (black pups on a white pearloid guard), I'll route another replacement and load it HSH and just swap em out for a different guitar sound. How's your setup sound with the L45s? Did you have to tweak much to get your tone? Are you going to try any of the resistor/capacitor (resonant frequency) mods found elsewhere on this site? Sorry, I'll let you answer now.

Are you going to try any of the resistor/capacitor (resonant frequency) mods found elsewhere on this site? First, the L-45S reproduces a very advanced and extended stratish tone; a bit higher output, but sweeter highs than a traditional one. It works well with both clean and crunch settings. Of course it is noise-free, too. Personaly, I like to adjust the volume control to clean up or drive the sound. It is just simple but effective. Now I am using the "custom" CTS pot instead of adding the treble bleed capacitor. I also employ the Stellartone ToneStyler T-508 (smooth rotation); You can check how it works on their website, for it is very tough for me to describe the details of its sound charactoristics in English Anyway, I like this control except some minor click noise. Should I change the volume pot to 250k? I was also considering swaping the bridge for the brass saddles like you. Is a huge difference? Did you have to redrill the holes? I was thinking of trying the Joe Barden tele bridge because of the cut out.

Did you have to redrill the holes? There is a little tonal difference between the brass saddle and stock one and redrilling is not required. Thanks.

I bought an L90XL and an L500XL when I saw both Ronnie Montrose and Joe Perry using them. Then, BL disappeared from my radar for years before I got wind of them online. Most people I speak with about them are naive or misinformed. I had a co-worker who was doing some high-end recording with an eight piece Journey type band asked me what pups I liked. When I mentioned BLs his only remark was in the form of a question: Aren't those kind of bright? When I tried to explain that most electric guitars come equipped with both a volume AND a tone knob, his attention waned - guess it was a concept he was unfamiliar with Looking forward to dropping some pics here.. if I could only find a camera......

The guitar is by March Guitars, and is equipped with two L-500XL pickups, with the neck pickup configured with both serial and parallel wiring, switchable with the volume push-pull. The tone control is a Q-filter supported switchable L/EQ set-up with the EQ equipped with a 0.022 uf cap and a 24.3 KOhm resistor. I thought Bill had finally gone completely mad when he suggested putting a L-500XL in the neck! But it works! Very dark and bluesy, surprisingly well balanced, and the neck pickup didn't overwhelm the amplifiers (Roland Micro-Cube, Pignose 7-100) even at full volume.

Posts: 13 Sun, Jul 12, 2009 22:57:08	Two nickels gap under the low E, 1½ nickels gap under the high E. The pickups were adjusted after the pictures were taken, so the neck pickup is now higher than what's seen in the picture. I asked for "lightly burnt", and that's exactly what the luthier gave me. Cherry mahogany wood grain is incredibly beautiful to look at, and I wanted to preserve it as much as possible while still having that "burnt" trim. It took eight months from order to final delivery, and it was well worth the wait. The results were way beyond my expectations. The guitar was on display for a couple of days during the Montreal Guitar Show before I got around to picking it up. Apparently, a lot of people freaked out at the sight of the BL pickups and asked if they were the real deal and not the fake ones.

It's a mahogany body with a mahogany set neck with and sounded way too muddy and lifeless with the stock seymour duncans. It sure sings now . I have a Q filter on the tone control as well and it pulls for split coils.

Mahogany body, Maple Neck, Schaller Hannes Bridge, Two Bill Lawrence Wilde L-90's. Del Here is a quote from Ron Kirn(builder): "I did a mahogany Tele with a pair of BIll Lawrence's L90s and the Hannes bridge.... it is probably the cleanest sounding...., Clean . . . NOT BRIGHT . . Tele I have ever done... I don't yet know if it's just everything coming together at a point in time, or is it's a combination of the Schaller Hannes bridge and the L 90s. It may be interesting to note, Bill touts the sonic properties of lighter bridges... kinda makes ya say, Hummmmm.." "I gotta tell ya... that is among the finest sounding teles I have had the pleasure of doing, the Bill Lawrence Pups with the Schaller bridge is simply stunning...."
