I have a Gibson SG Faded series (solid mahogany body and neck) that actually has better tone and playability than some of the more expensive standards that I have played . It has stock Gibson 490s in it mounted in the standard style pick guard (no rings). I read that the 500s are a different size than the stock Gibson humbuckers. Will I have to modify my pickguard to accommodate the L500XL for the bridge position? Also I had planned on keeping the stock 490r pup in the neck position as I really like the tone of that pup in that position. Will the L500XL mix with that pup well? And finally, I also read that it is recommended that 500k pots be used with the L500XL. I'm not sure what comes stock in the Gibson SG Faded? I play metal primarily in drop C tuning but I also like the versatility to play other styles (hence my wanting to keep the jazzy clean sound of the 490r in the neck). I had planned on just swapping out the Gibson 490t in the bridge for the L500XL. I would greatly appreciate some advice before I decide on my final purchase. Thanks.
