First off, I'm not a strat guy. However, after hearing so much about Bill's strat pickups, I now have a strat-like guitar outfitted with L280N, L280M, L250XL.
I do find it inspiring - for a strat
Hats off to Bill - again!
Recently, I did up another strat (which I will be selling) with Bill's Keystones. The Keystones are very much more traditional sounding - not my thing. Maybe they're more like the L200s, which seem to be favored on this forum at the moment?
I have read a lot here about the L280 being a very versatile pickup, making it trickier to optimise. Some people here have said that it has taken them years to figure the L280 out, but now that they have figured the pup out, they love it.
I wonder if those people who have a lot of experience with the L280 could be a bit more specific about this mysterious pickup, which holds so much reward for those willing to work at it. I mean, I think it sounds great, full on with a flat EQ - no hassles at all. Does the hard work come about solely because people try to make it sound traditional or try to get Knofler-esque or SRV tones? What are the secrets of getting your favorite tones out of the L280s. What are people aiming for and what sorts of settings adjustments get them there?
