I was unhappy with the stock 'vintage' neck pickup mostly because of it being NOISY and because of its uneven string response, especially for the first and 6th string. The first (highE) always seemed to low and the 6th (low E) tended to sound muffled or muddy.
So I put in a 280TN. The results are: gone is the noise, I like that very much. The high E is now nicely balanced.
BUT: the low E, while balanced now volume-wise, sounds kinda odd, wolf-tonish. Now that might not be an pick-up issue, it might be a guitar issue, but it's hard to say.
AND: the 280TN is pretty bright and sounds almost like an acoustic steel string guitar. In fact I don't really like that. Turnign down the tone pot takes highs off ofcourse, but still.....I somewhat like the 'tone quality' of the original 'vintage PU' better, but then hated it for the reasons stated above.
Question to all of you: any suggestions, any of you with similar experiences. Do I have wrong expectations, the wrong guitar, the wrong pickup?
