The L-450 is the big brother of the L-280. Bill used to say that the L-450 and the L-280 are his favourites. I don't know if that's changed at all since the introduction of the L-290 series and the L-49x series.
L-450s (alnico 3 core, fixed poles, 15mm magnetic field). Each of the two coils is charged with 6 short alnico 3 magnets.
Inductances available (Henries): 0.5, 1.0, 1.6, 2.4, 3.6, 4.8, 6.4, and 8.8 (XL). The standard Gibson (G) combo for Les Pauls/SGs/335s/etc is a 4.8 Henry bridge (L) and a 3.6 Henry neck (N). The standard Fender (F) bridge (L) is 3.6 Henry, and the standard Fender (F) neck (N) is 2.4 Henry.
There has been considerable confusion on the forum about the tonality of the L-450s, so please read the following carefully.
To understand the tonality of the L-450s, first one needs to understand that the range should best be considered in two groups: the lower inductance L-450s, and the higher inductance L-450s.
The lower inductance L-450s are:
Neck: 0.5H, 1.0H, 1.6H, and 2.4H.
Bridge: 1.0H, 1.6H, 2.4H, and 3.6H.
These lower inductance versions should be thought of as delivering BIG, FAT single-coil tone in a full-size-humbucker package.
> This is the pickup for "connoisseurs". The L-450A-5 (only 1/2 Henry inductance) was used by Wes Montgomery and Grant Green.
> The L-450A-10 (1 Henry) and the L-450A-16 (1.6 Henry) make a Thinline sound like a real single coil Tele, but much richer.
> Bill used to say that his "perfect Strat" has the L-280S Neck and Middle, and a L-450FL36 in the bridge.
The higher inductance L-450s are:
Neck: 3.6H, and 4.8H.
Bridge: 4.8H, 6.4H, and 8.8H (XL)
These higher inductance versions should be thought of as full-blown humbuckers, yet compared with PAF-style humbuckers, they are more percussive (Fenderesque), with a much broader tonal spectrum, and are mud free.
Using various capacitors and resistors they can be variously voiced (see below for suggestions regarding obtaining PAF tone).
For those wanting the more traditional pole-piece look, as opposed to the twin blades of the L-500's, the higher inductance L-450's deliver similar tone to their L-500 siblings.
