Posts: 19376 Sat, Dec 14, 2002 16:39:46 The Big FIBer	Tags : None Im thinking about a general gearheads forum, similar to the Sippin Sodie Pop with Goober forum over at The Dudepit. However, I must note that such discussion is already permitted in our forums. Im still very wary of expanding our forums and spreading ourselves too thinly, but Im thinking of forums that will generate participation. Also, Im not sure why Speakers-Corner is so dead? Equivalent forums on other boards are generally by far the busiest. Just because Im not personally into too much social discussion, it shouldnt stop anyone else.

Its extremely inactive; dead even by FIB stds. By comparative accounts, it should have several thousands of posts.

Often that type of a sub-forum is listed on top of the page because it's the one everybody can (and will) join in on, even newbies and people with no interest or nothing to add to more specific topics. To me FIB stands as a wealth of facts and detailed info, thus socializing does not feel as right, and the active membership is less interested in the kind of chit-chat. Also: the children will look like their father,... so the image of the forum follows the image of the founder. (or something, it's too early on a Sunday [and I'm at work] for me to make much sense in my writing... )

"All Other Guitars" holds a distant second but a significant lead over the others. If I remember correctly, "The Lounge", our general chat area, really is dead; getting about as much action as the "repair shop" where people ask about mods and repairs. With practice and determination, one day, my playing will not suck.

Perhaps everyone else is doing the same, therefore there is less "chit chat" about my cousins dog or the best brand of cheese, which is in my opinion a good thing. I dont think we need that here, do we? After all, it isnt the quantity that matters, its the quality.

Harmony Central and Usenet, for example, are good resources but it's time consuming and tedious sifting through all the OT posts, the trolls and the flames and the spam to get to the info you want. Likewise the FDP has most of it's traffic in Moes, almost all of which is of no relevance whatsoever to the guitar.

I was just wondering if the lack of off-topic posts, or the impression that they weren't welcome, maybe meant you concentrated participation elsewhere? I just thought off-topic might be a means to more on-topic. My thoughts are simply about making the FIB your #1. I still post about 30% of all posts on the FIB, and Id like to see that no higher than 20%, as really I don't want my opinions to continue to be so dominant.

And by far the only forum I am going - I stopped visiting the V-amp@yahoo, cause it started to lack focus and did not provide the info I wanted.(it all came with longer experience on the gear itself) I have to agree with jonas.... (some 2 posts above) Cheers Edited to delete the same lines as are to be found below in my other post. If thered be something "really" off-topic Id feel all of us here should be of any interest in it, Id post it. But mainly I try to keep my posts about the thing that connects the whole of us - music. Edited to edit what was edited before and made some editable unconvenience = edited in an effort to save the thread....

Most forums on the net are full of bird do-do, while others have some off topic stuff but don't go overboard with it. I feel that off topic discussion makes the people more like people in my mind, and the site more like home. I like that. Most stuff is opinions in the end, and knowing where the people stand, and what is their story, etc will give better perspective on the opinions. I agree with Johnnies: Many forums are very US centered while FIB isn't. I digs that. :-)

I just meant that I agree with jonass post above.... and I think (in MHO) that some of the posts I saw times before at FDP just do not match the high niveau criteria weve settled here among us. (as f.i. "It is snowing here today", "Have you seen Liz Hurley in Bedazzled?" etc) I think that even when there is thousands of posts on other forums in the off topic gates, covering virtually anything from ice hockey to presidental election in the U.S. it aint that good for the Forum itself and the main target it was intended to cover....the F.I.B. is different. It is different that it contains really mature debate, loads of info and no place and time consuming chat on b******* (pardon me.) If thered be something "really" off-topic Id feel all of us here should be of any interest in it, Id post it. But mainly I try to keep my posts about the thing that connects the whole of us - music. Many folks seem to feel this way, which is why I'm interested in all your opinions. weelie, this isnt aimed at you! I've been slammed on one forum for not participating socially, but quite frankly, I'm not much into bs chit-chat for no good reason - not online anyway. And, I personally need to feel I've got something attitudinally in common with someone. Similar attitude and outlook is important to me when talking more personal. I can accept young folks talking immaturely, but IMO, too many forums are overly subscribed with immature middle-aged men. Yes, I can fully appreciate that, which is why we need to somehow increase participation levels. Traffic, as opposed to participation, is currently dramatically higher than it was only a short time ago. Participation levels (based on number of posts) are up and down, but the average is quite constant. Yeah, that's what I'm hoping to change...somehow.

And agree that music is the common interest we share, so most of the bla-bla would not interest most/all of us anyway. You are right about the middle-aged posters around the 'net with their eternal puberty. This site has none of that Mine is Bigger than yours, which I think why we all love it here. I logged on to FDP stratocaster forum a couple of days ago, and the first (and only) post I read was asking about sustain or something, and in addition added "and I don't mean Epiphone's and Squiers because I don't consider them guitars". All that crap... s me off too. But I like to fool around too.

I feel in this place like home.Mainly because of you - nice folks all around the globe. (And partly because there aint no silly talks. And when a joke - then a good one) And about the off topics - several times we just go off topic in all the gates just like in "normal" conversation, because that how the thoughts go. So if we just start to talk somewhere and it is going some direction, IMO it is a bit disturbing to say - "Ok Fellas lets talk it over again at the Speakers corner" (when were not just there). I want to say that sometimes we reveal ourselves and our wishes in the likes of Signal Chain or Axe Gate.... Cheers
