Epiphone is one of the oldest names in the business with a wide range of guitars currently on offer from Squier to Gibson levelMIK/MIJ/MIA. Most of their offerings (even those MIK) are (in the Fender context at least) mid-level offerings and up. Squier was the jewel in the CBS crown. Some of the very best guitars from the CBS years were MIJ and branded with a Squier decal, which was then simply the export decal for MIJ Fenders. Brands rise and fall with the tides of change. Many folks either latch on to the worst or live in the past, or latch on to the present with no concept of the past. I see many sites talking about wanting more women to participate, but in the same breath post in a manner totally insensitive and uninviting to women...and mature men.

Their plywood solid-body guitars were generally a joke, although their thinlines and archtops gained a bit more respect. An informed and meticulous buyer would probably find a diamond in the rough and polish it up (including, but not limited to, replacing ALL the electronic components: pickups, pots, caps, jack socket & wiring...) and have a great axe. This would probably happen after he or she had rejected a few. The base range seems to be improving, though, and now they have the new Epiphone Elite line, which are MIJ. I would like to try those out, especially if they expand their range to include reissues of 60s Epi solids and solid-top reissues of the old Epiphone Deluxe and Emperor (competitors to Gibson's L-5 and Super 400 respectively) With practice and determination, one day, my playing will not suck.

Palladium Charter Member Czech Master of Rock Guitar	Well, some of the Epiphone solid bodies were actually crafted in the Czech rep. from selected woods, I mean no playwood. It was mainly the LP Standards in various kind of bursts and the first line of Explorers and Flying Vs . And we all here know that their thin lines /dot f.i./ are good axes. Even here in the CZ where the brand snobbery is huge the Epiphones are becoming good reviews as an affordable alternative to "real" Gibsons - the only weaknes always claimed is the pups (not a problem one cant solve IMO). Not to say that teh company has a long tradition of its own long before they were swallowed by Gibsons.

Then, IIRC, Korean production began in the late 1980's, and Czech production in the late 1990's. Of course, they're now once again MIJ. This would probably happen after he or she had rejected a few." I have a late 1999 (MIK @ Samick) Dot, and although I have upgraded it, it was fine. I wanted one in natural, and I hunted down the last natural Dot available in NZ at the time (IIRC, July 2000). So, it was like it or lump it, and I like it. The fit and finish is very good. IMO, the Epi Dot is a fantastic bargain. I agree with this review. Btw, I was going to get the set-neck Samick version, but they deviate from Gibson spec as far as woods, and the pups weren't as good, but fit and finish on those I saw was very good. > "The base range seems to be improving, though," I can only speak from my interest over the last few years, and I've found the low-end stuff to be, well, low-end, no matter who makes it. I think the Speakers Corner title and the "Mature, non-gear, preferably music-related, OFF-TOPIC DISCUSSION AREA." discription, while describing the content kind of discourages "non-music" talk. Not strongly, but it still seems implied. There is something to be said for getting to know each other. I know this is risky because sometimes things can get a little out of hand but with a little moderating and common sense there can be some pleasant interaction in which we all get to know each other better. In most BBS's that I've been to that have a successful OT forum, it is near or at the top of the page and it is designed to be a place to get to know each other in a friendly manner. I don't know if that would work here, but to my estimation, most of the folks who already frequient this place are level headed and kind. So, I don't think it would hurt to at least give it a try. If things do get out of hand, it's a pretty simple matter to just remove it. I will admit that I rarely visited Moe's at the FDP because of the content but some of the other forums I post at I do enjoy the sitting around the living room feeling. To be perfectly honest, based on the forum descriptions, I am sometimes confused as to whether something should be posted in the Catch-Gate, Speakers-Corner, or the Sounding-Board. This is the next thing on my list to address...when I have a better idea of how best to make the changes, lessen confusion, and streamline. I had thought of merging the Catch-Gate and Speakers-Corner, but I decided there wasn't sufficient overlap, and that we need a gear or simply an all-music catchall. Then I thought of doing away with the Sounding-Board, as I'd started to use Speakers-Corner to post much of what the Sounding-Board was intended for. However, I've decided that there is probably a place for a separate board-related forum. My current thinking is to change the forum description for Speakers-Corner, as you've suggested, and better describe the Catch-Gate. I've considered moving the Speakers-Corner before, and decided against. I know what you mean, but I'm not sure I'd like it to become the focal point that such forums have on other boards, but maybe I'm wrong, and maybe I'll change my mind, or be persuaded to do so.

Although it only has ONE humubucking pickup, it's quality, playability and workmanship are on par with my Gibson ES-135LE, and the sound from that one HB is every bit as good as that of the Gibson. ...anybody else?
