So far I'm really enjoying this news reporting business.
I'm sure I could sign up for another month if needed. |

So, I see. But, I've handed over at the calm period after the storm... > "I'm sure I could sign up for another month if needed." If you're still keen at the end of the month, maybe I'll take you up on that. There are sure to be times when a backup is needed too. I'm not sure I will be able to spend much time at the end of July/early August, when the next NAMM news will need to be posted, so it would be good to know I can call on someone else then. bkief1 is booked for July, but he will likely need help at the end of the month, and whoever does August will likely need help at the beginning of the month. I would like to be able to do that, but I can't guarantee my availability at the moment. Harmony-Central keeps mucking about with the way they post the NAMM videos, and it's not for the better either. This time, not only was it in a separate place, with the inability to post direct links, but they kept adding and adding and adding videos with no obvious indicator of what they'd added, because they actually kept inserting them in alphabetical order. So, I had to constantly go through all the videos from top to bottom, usually several times a day. I hope they don't do that in July, because it will surely give bkief1 and the August person a headache, because they will need to keep abreast of the main page, the NAMM page/s, and the videos page for about a week each, and it's harder for the August person, because they probably won't be that familiar with what bkief1's already done. That's why I'd like to be on-hand at that time, because we could share the load. I definitely want to be on-hand to cover the Fender and Squier news, but this time even Fender dragged their announcements out over several days. Fortunately, the July NAMM is usually quieter than the January one, so hopefully it won't be as tough as the one just gone. There's also other places that post NAMM news, like I came across Gearwire.com this time. So, at times like that, I can easy assign two or more folks different sites to cover, or even different parts of the same site. Of course, there's GuitarPlayer.com , as well as signing up for Reverend News, Gibson News, Epiphone News, and of course, Fender E-mail News. bkief1 usually posts the Reverend news before I get chance, so that's cool. The others aren't a big deal, at least as far as gear, but I generally ignore posting their artist news. And Fender's email communication doesn't seem as good as it should be, so I tend to have to visit their news site every so often. All that said, and I bet you didn't expect or want such a long reply, I think you will learn what is likely worth posting and also what is likely not. For instance, I see you posted some plug-in news. That is often the majority of the news, and sometimes it's overwhelming. I stopped posting any of it ages ago. I also used to post the software updates, but don't any more. I personally believe that the recording news was only ever of interest to a few people, but there just wasn't enough interest to warrant the time (and space...because you can quickly fill up loads of forum pages with such news), and those few people who were somewhat interested don't come here much any more. There are now plenty of dedicated forums for general recording, and for the various software packages too, so I really think it's beyond our scope. At NAMM time, I post the most interesting recording news, and if I come across something that amazes me, like one of the new synths, I post that too. But essentially, all I post is those items, usually interfaces and control surfaces, that folks might find useful for guitar, bass and vocal recordings. BUT I tend to ignore posting expensive interfaces and microphones and the likes, because I think all we're trying to do is keep folks abreast of some of the latest options, on the off-chance that they might be interested. If someone is really interested in recording, or is looking for a new item of gear, I would expect them to do their own research in conjunction with one or more of the dedicated forums. Hope this helps! And, thanks for the job you're doing!! Good work! Aide toi et le ciel taidera (Aid thyself and heaven will aid thee) |

Re: Re: | #26 | ||

Also, I should add that Harmony-Central has got an increasingly annoying habit of posting gear news without pictures. When they do, I rarely bother to post it, because it has been proven that our members want to see the pictures, and only want to read the minimum. And that's pretty normal for modern folks.

I'm no "home recording gear head" really but when I read those items I thought: "hmm, I bet that could be of interest to my brother" who sometimes visits here. So I thought what the heck
But anyway, I'm just happy to lend a helping hand whenever needed. |

Cool! At the end of the day, the beauty of having a different news editor every month is that we'll get various perspectives on what's newsworthy. I'm not expecting anyone to adhere to any strict formula, because I haven't developed one. What develops is a gut feeling over time, and everyone's will be different. It's all good! Anyway, I've just passed on some of my thoughts and experiences, for whatever they're worth. I have ended up trying to be pretty minimalistic, though I don't think I've necessarily succeeded. But if you go through H-C's NAMM Guitar/Bass coverage, you'll see that I didn't post all the new guitar announcements like I normally would at other times. Just don't get too carried away or I'll be constantly having to archive stuff... Just so you know; when the 20th forum page is full, ezboard permanently drops off the oldest threads, which is why I have to manually archive stuff. Some of the forums are quite full, so one needs to be conscious of the need to archive before 20 pages are filled, else we lose stuff. The Bass-Gate is on its 20th page right now, and I need to create an archive forum to move the oldest threads into. Depending on the forum, archiving can be a bit of a pain, because some of the archives are still corrupted from the ezboard attack, so it's not a good idea to add to those already existing. It looks to me like they just need to be re-indexed but ezboard gave up and I haven't bothered to hassle them, but I will at some stage. Sorry for beeing the lazy me I am and passing on this. I certainly could take up a month sometime in the future, but the summer period is out (because if the weather is good, I'll be out too!), and don't really know what the autumn will bring (if I have time).

No pressure, I did say volunteers, but
Or, have you got a problem with commitment? I should also add that while I appreciate very much any help that's on offer, I also appreciate that it's just not possible for some, and for others it might take the pleasure out of participating. But hey, did I say that somebody's got to do it?! Aide toi et le ciel taidera (Aid thyself and heaven will aid thee) |

Re: Re: | #31 | ||

Notes for news posters:
1) Please ignore Reverend news on Harmony-Central, as Reverend has a habit of re-releasing its press releases, sometimes several times, and H-C doesn't seem to check. Reverend emails all of its PRs as well, so we won't miss out. Either myself or someone else will post all Reverend news. 2) Sometimes a press release is a notification that a product is now shipping, which usually (but not always) means there was previously a PR announcing the product. When I used to do all the news posting, I could usually remember if I'd already posted an announcement, and so I'd look for an existing thread, and if I found one, I'd append "now shipping" notification. However, now there are multiple news posters, such won't be practicable. Therefore, I suggest that shipping notices be ignored, because there has almost always been a previous PR announcing the product. Of course, if it's a really cool product and you don't remember previously reading about it, then, despite the risk of duplication, it won't hurt to post about it. Re: Re: | #32 | ||

Thanks to all those that have volunteered so far!
I'd now really like to see August, October, and November of this year taken care of as well. At this stage, I am happy to do December. I also think I should be able to do the second half of November, so if someone would just like to commit to the first half of November '07, that would be helpful and appreciated. It would be really great if all volunteers would do so for both 2007 and '08, but if you can't commit that far ahead, that's fine. At this stage, as long as this year is taken care, it will be a big load off me. I'd just plough on and wouldn't ask if I didn't need this guys, so please help. Thanks. Hey nocaster,
Sign me up for August if you like. I'm sure I could also do a second or third if no one else is available. Hope you're well, by the way. - Dave

Re: August | #36 | ||

Thanks, Dave! August it is. And I'm doing okay, thanks.
If we can get just two more volunteers for October and November this year, that would be greatly appreciated. I'd prefer not to have to ask anyone to do double duty, even though there are a few that are willing to do so. And if anyone who volunteered for this year only, now feels able to commit to the same time next year as well, please let me know. Aide toi et le ciel taidera (Aid thyself and heaven will aid thee) |

Volunteers still required for October, November and December 2007/2008.
Anyone want to do October? There's two weeks to catch up on and two weeks to do. I should be free from mid-November, and will do Nov and Dec (as well as Jan), if nobody else volunteers. Aide toi et le ciel taidera (Aid thyself and heaven will aid thee) |
