CBS/Fender acquired the V.C. Squier company, (an instrument string making company), in 1965 to produce Fender Strings. In 1982 the first Fender "Vintage Series" guitars were produced in Japan. In that same year, in an effort to differentiate American and Japanese "Fender" guitars in markets other than Japan, Fender Japan began identifying their export guitars with a small "Squier" logo on the end of the headstock. Later that year this logo was replaced by a larger "Squier" decal, which took the place of the Fender logo on the headstock. These were the first Squier brand instruments. And so, began the history of Squier...
Since then Squiers have been produced in India, Korea, Mexico, China and Indonesia. Since circa 1988, Squier has been Fenders budget brand.
