Here is a brief description of my recent USAGC project:
Detailed description
Photo of control cavity
As you can see, minimalism was the theme. On my other guitars I control tone by diming the tone control, rolling back the volume control to 90%, and handling any further EQ at the amp. My idea was that I could do without a tone pot, since I dime it anyway. This approach works fine on an archtop I have that has an old floating BL humbucker.
I am not crazy about the tone I am getting on this guitar, and nocaster suggested that passing on a tone control may be at the root of my problems, and suggested that I solicit ideas here.
The photo is not completely clear, but what I have is a 1970s L510 "rhythm" blade pickup. Red wire to the right post (as you view the photo), white and black to the pot. A white wire on the center post, and a gray wire on the left post, go to the output jack. Another white wire goes from the top of the pot to the tailpiece.
Of course, I could always add a tone pot, but I kind of like the look of the guitar without one. The control cavity is a real swimming pool, so I could put just about anything in there, including a tone control. But I would be interested in any thoughts. Just looking for a warm midrangy jazz tone.
