Here is what I found with the L-298TL: I have a 1999 Fender 52 Re-issue tele. I replaced the stock Fenders with a L-280TN and a L290TL and also wired the guitar with a 5 way switch using Bill's T4+1 diagram. I also changed the brass saddles to titianium (incredible harmonic content improvement). The Tele came alive with tone, harmonic richness, and no hum! Having the incredible opportunity to spend time with Bill and Becky in Corona, Bill showed me and demonstrated the new 298 prototype on his strat. Clearly, the sound quality coming from this pickup was pure magic. Well, I finally received the L298 for my tele, installed it and all I can say is I can't take the tele out of my hands. The 298 has a very special transparency to it. At lower volume, the sound becomes very acoustic like. Full volume it is rich with harmonic content, no brittle treble, and no hum. I am using blackface fenders with a fulltone OCD, Fulltone FDII with every mod available, and a Tim pedal from Paul Cochrane, amp designer for Heritage amps, a Fulltone Fatboost, H&K rotovibe and replex. The 280 Neck and 298 Lead are an amazing combination of tele pickups. I will be adding the 298 to my two strats (with Lawrence pickups of course).
Many thanks to Becky and Bill for their efforts, successes, products, and friendship!
sincerely,
Rick Fass
