I'm sure there's a very simple explanation for this. But I can't figure it out.
String spacing? - The Esquire/Tele was first with what I assume was a purpose designed bridge pickup so I don't think they were trying to make a uniform pickup work in all positions.
Balance string energy? - The bass strings have greater energy to begin with and even more further from the bridge. I could see slanting the other direction if this was the reason, not to mention slanting all positions.
