I actually see these names somewhat differently. Kateřina would be shortened to Kate or Katie in English, whereas Catherine becomes Cath or Cathy. As the majority are voting in favour of these names I won't detail my own perspective, beyond stating that they lead me to strongly favour K over C.

Any final decision, Johnnies?

In the Anglo world, two first names are the norm, with the second mostly not used. Second, third, etc, first names are often given to honour relatives, and in the US especially, where the use of the middle initials is quite universal, it is also not uncommon to see folks identify themselves as first initial followed by middle name. Thus, you see that the given second name gives the option of using it instead of the given first name, if the person ends up preferring it.

My elder brother's second given name is my mother's maiden name. And my father prefers his second given name over his first.

The number of middle names has in the past also reflected a class distinction, with the upper classes often having three middle names. It's also not uncommon to see obviously pretentious middle-class families give their kids two middle names.

Personally, I think such is a perfectly reasonable stance. It can be hard to move beyond agnosticism, and, well, there have of course been so many bad things done by the Church and in its name.

FWIW, my biggest beef is with hardcore atheists/anti-theists that are so blinded by their intolerant campaigning/proselytising stance that they refuse to see that atheism is as much a religion for them as theism is for others, and potentially far more dangerous than they claim theism is.

I have no problem with atheists who don't deny the right of others to think differently and don't consider theists to have subnormal intelligence.

Intolerant folks, and folks that think everyone should convert to their religion (and that includes atheism), by whatever means necessary, are demonstrably responsible for some of the world's biggest problems.

Unfortunately, I seem to be encountering more and more of these folks that either think everything can be explained by 20th-century science and that those who don't agree are unintelligent, or think that their religion has all the answers for all people and won't be happy until everyone in the world is converted. To me, both ways of thinking are two sides of the same coin, and represent closed-mindedness, and the denial of both evolving understandings and the possibility that they might not be 100% right.

And when you add the rapidly increasing social-engineering, revisionism, fanaticism, eugenicism, and left-wing fascism, and it's little wonder the world is in such a mess.

Sometimes one just has to vent.
