High E string falling off the fretboard.....

Posts: 6 Thu, May 15, 2008 14:46:02	Tags : None I did a USACG T-style guitar about a year ago and it plays "almost" like a dream.........high E string falls off the fretboard too easy. I had some trouble with a not so straight body+neck joint, but that got fixed. Could the frets be over beveled? I asked for heavy rolled edges but that should not cause a problem.... Doing vibrato on the high E string is almost impossible.....the way around the problem is to adjust my playing. It is not a matter of bad technique because on my old 52 RI I did not have this problem. I took a crappy photo on the nut so you could see if there is a problem there....but it doesn't look possible to cut the nut slot for the high E string closer to the center. Any ideas?

Posts: 16 Thu, May 15, 2008 17:36:39	Looks like you have a 1 + 3/8ths string array combined with a 1.65 neck width at the nut. This works for me, but our techniques must differ. You could tweak the neck after loosening the neck bolts and accomplish a little rotation in that neck pocket, retighten. It may be ugly to have more space alongside the string on the high E side than on the low E side, but I think you'll like the way the guitar plays. Your other choice is to do a new nut with a string array narrower than what you have, evenly spacing the six strings or crowding the unwound strings a bit closer together. I've enjoyed yer many posts, but somehow I guess I lost tack you were a lefty! Bubbanov

Posts: 7 Thu, May 15, 2008 18:31:27	Thanks for the reply. The nut width should be 1.625".......at least that is what I ordered. I tried some time ago to loosen the neck bolts and pull the neck up but there is only so much one can pull. Made it a little better and with a 0.11 set on it is bearable but still a bit annoying. I need to get some fret dress done soon so I'll tell the tech to maybe cut a new nut with slightly more narrow string array. Really need to get some proper files an learn how to cut nut slots. Sorry to confuse you, I am not a lefty......the iSight camera in the Macbook takes reversed photos : )

I do use a lot of 11-49s, and come to think of it, all my 1.63-1.64 neck width geetars all have 11-49s. The things we do unconsciously, eh? Bubbanov

Posts: 8 Fri, May 30, 2008 01:10:22	Fender style necks can often have this problem with certain players. Loosen the neck screws and hold the neck over while you tighten them back up. You may have a slight angle on the neck but many players do this. I saw a close-up of Clapton's Blackie neck that had it like this also. The low E gradually gets closer to the edge and the high E moves slightly in. You're other choice is to recut a nut with the spacing narrowed a little to get the outside strings in the fretboard more.
