Looking for opinions on the switching. Like it or not? In general, I hear complaints about guitars that have too many combinations. Personally, I wouldn't be looking to switch back and forth between the ten combos, rather I'd use it from one song to the next, instead of reaching for another guitar. But I haven't actually played it to know whether the various combos are useful.

Check out the diagram at Mr. Gearhead at Fender's site. Looks like, without the switch engaged, the only potential deviation from basic 5-way wiring is that the bridge 'bucker is split in position #4. Then again, this is fairly standard for a lot of "Fat" Strats. With the switch engaged, you get 4 completely new combinations: 1) neck SERIES with middle 2) middle SERIES with neck/split-bridge PARALLEL combo (very unique) 3) position 1 setting (N+M) in PARALLEL with bridge HB (this is the "Alex Lifeson Sportscaster" Strat tone) 4) middle PARALLEL with full bridge HB (like #4 without S-1, but with full HB) 5) no change from regular S-1 off HB sound Personally, IMO (FWIW!), I think the S-1 adds three potentially cool sounds to the Fat Strat without cluttering up the control panel. - Position #1 is a really cool way to somewhat mimic a neck humbucker on a guitar that doesn't have one. - I've always been a bit curious about the Lifeson thingy that position #3 yields. It's my understanding that, since he was so used to Gibsons, he had his red Strat wired a bit non-conventionally. He had a BL L-500 in the bridge. In lieu of the 5-way, he had a Gibson-style 3-way toggle mounted on the pickguard near the treble horn. The neck and middle were hard-wired together at all times. In the Gibson 3-way scheme, they together took the place of a neck HB. The L-500 was the bridge HB. (The only thing I'm not 100% certain is that the neck and middle were hard-wired in series or parallel. I think they were series, but maybe I'm wrong.) HB tone on a guitar that doesn't have a neck HB. - Position #4 sounds like a handy, easy way to fatten up the non S-1 position #4 sound by bringing in the full HB.

I've only spent about an hour with it as of yet, but so far I think it is great. I got woke up at 4 AM by some woman pounding on my door and screaming. So, I hadda get up and let her out. Being a gemini, I have one strat with one pickup, one volume, no tone; another (since stolen) with three pickups (two of which had coil taps), two phase switches, a six way selector, 1v,2t with cominations up the wazoo. So I've enjoyed simplicity and complexity. I raised the question because sometimes the added complexity winds up not adding very many useful sounds. For example, most everyone I hear from remarks split humbuckers are useless. I was looking to hear whether the extra combinations on the S-1 were useless or just too similar to what you already have to make it worth it. From the response so far, sounds like its a winner. Thanks to all.

I got to play it last night and I was duly impressed. I'm not the type to do a lot of switching during a song, but not having to switch guitars between songs and still get a lot of different tones is nice. I didn't find the swithing to complicated to use anyway. The rosewood fretboard, bridge humbucker and satin neck finish were all different from any of my strats, so it was kinda refreshingly different.

Posts: 357 Tue, Apr 1, 2008 15:20:28 Bronze Member	a little bump found a set SCN and could not resist wanting to hear what BL made out of this tonal quest. but i have only the pups. the S-1 switch i have to order with fender and probably need a special 5 way , am i correct. there are more de luxe diagrams, witch would i need/ and when not working with the s-1 witch wires do i need to work with a normal strat diagram, because these pups have three?
