Silver Charter Member Resident Hair Metalmaster	Tags : None I recently read an interview in Classic Rock magazine where Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley said that there will be no new Kiss-material. As I understood it it's mainly for two reasons; they are happy playing the music they have made and they see no point in making another album because people will just download it for free anyway. How do you feel about this? Does a band have an obligation towards their fans to keep making new material? Surely the money issue isn't such a big deal since they probably have more money than they can possibly spend in a lifetime anyway but you can't really say they are wrong for not wanting to be giving music away for free can you? I think there is also something to be said for NOT writing new material. By sticking to their back catalogue they are not risking taking the band in some weird new direction that fans will dislike, as with Metallica's 'St Anger' or Bon Jovi's new album which flirts heavily with country.

The fans on concerts will ask for the old material anyway. And when there is no inspiration or new songs do not come easily, then why force it? I do not know if a band that is playing over 20 years and has more than a full set of successfull songs actually has an obligation to come with new material and I second that there is very high risk to come out with something "strange" or even weak. Then all the critics would come: "Oh, yeah, Kiss' new release does not reach the quality of their albums of yesteryears...." Giving music for free is a different thing, there is an song writer/performe over here who officially offered hi album on the internet and called it "The Burned One" and everyone was free to download it. He did not make a fortune on the record sale, but the downloads were huge and his shows were crowded afterwards. But I doubt this will work with such a huge band / institution as Kiss. They may try anyway - new material, officialy free for download upon a log in on a fan page or something....

Until one is really happy with any new material that is produced, ie, unless it is considered to measure up well against the existing catalogue, it is best not to release any. As far as not being driven by a commercial imperative to release new albums, and if they did release a new album, commenting that it would probably be mainly downloaded for free anyway, such is probably a statement of the reality that Kiss probably wouldn't sell significantly more albums than it would concert tickets, and that like most bands, their back catalogue is already largely downloaded for free rather than purchased. And also like most bands, if one couldn't download their back catalogue for free, or maybe single songs bought for a small fee, I'm pretty sure most folks would not be rushing to the music stores to buy old albums, but rather forgoing the pleasures altogether. I agree. There are quite many songs I like and wouldn't mind listening to them every now and then. However, they're not good enough to spend money on, certainly not the price of a cd. Ön the other hand, if I really like some songs I would STILL buy the album even if I had dowloaded it (which I don't do anyway because I don't have a computer of my own and I have never really bothered to learn how to do it).

And whenever I've seen Gene Simmons online in the past two years (and he has been on several times), he has proudly voiced that they (Paul & Gene) are only in it for the money. I guess the other two in the band are the only musicians, then. In the reports I've heard about them live now, it plays out like that too. They had a gig here, and the guitar store here had the "other two" (whatever their names) giving a workshop at a guitar shop next to my place. I doubt there was long cue to that. I never really liked them. As a kid in the early 80s, in our class you had to choose if you liked Kiss (the current hit was Lick it up) or Twisted Sister.
