It's a shame they discontinued the stand alone Tonelab. I'll probably buy a second someday, just so I have a backup plan for the future.
I didn't really like the integrated foot controller, so I bought it separate. (Call me superstitious about something like that near the front of the stage.) I really don't think the Korg/Vox people in America really knew what they were doing. Customer service was sketchy a few years ago. The guy didn't really want to answer my questions, and most of my info came from other users on the internet...not any "Japanese' engineers as some would say. I've seen the blueprint schematic and the name of the guy who designed it. It really makes for a nice pre-amp. It responds well to a guitar input, unlike soundcards. It also has a nice look. The only thing I didn't like...was the solid state output section in their Valvetronix combo amps. I've got a Behringer Tube Composer to warm up the pre-amp signal now. I'd feel comfortable with that arrangement into a couple of full stacks. I also have multiple guitar amps, if I choose to go that route. I don't see it any other way...you either use a big power block amp, say at least 250 per side (stereo), or at least 200 watts of mono tube amp. Trusting a 'house' mix to bring up your 'emulation' on stage...is just asking for trouble. It almost inevitably sounds like the kick/bass farting out, along with digital distortion mixed in there for good measure. Nevermind the clean overhead some people may want at times, ballads anyone(?)... ...but if your mids don't cut through...you might as well just funk out to a bunch of whirly gizmo sounds like Rage Against the Machine or Korn or something...because you certainly won't sound like a real band with that 2x12 combo bedroom amp, going straight to the mix with a D. I. Don't believe it. It's unprofessional...and you're short the full ten yards, Monty. I don't even wait for the second set, because it's that much in poor taste to me. (Nevermind the fact, there's probably street walking whores outside the front door anyway.) How much good talent have I seen wasted with a poor choice in equipment? I'll never know. But don't call me a snob...just for trying to get your noise out of my head. There's plainly a difference between drunken idiots screaming like they're on the bender...and people in Europe or Canada or whomever...maybe certain colleges in the States...who want to listen to good music, like jazz for instance. I don't know what Vox is doing these dayas...but last time I heard, they were manufacturing super-powerful 'modern' heads. I believe they were based on the old circuits, but don't quote me.
A thousand years have come and gone, But Time has passed me by, Stars stopped in the sky, Frozen in the everlasting view. (song "Xanadu" by Rush)
