Posts: 4 Thu, Aug 14, 2008 03:17:47	Tags : None Truthfully, I'm pretty new to the club. I've pretty much been a Fender guy (and really still am in many ways) and my first bass was a Fender Precision Fretless I purchased back in 1973 -- and wish I'd never sold, lol. What I've had for the past couple of months is a 1997 Emerald Green translucent all-maple (neck and body wings -- heavy) Carvin LB75F with the ebony fingerboard. I absolutely love this thing though I'm already messing with it. The neck and the solidity of it are just outstanding. When I got it, the fret lines (yes, it's lined) were "rising up" so I got a radius block from Stew-Mac and sanded it and it's truly a beautiful ebony thing. I've changed out the older A500B preamp for a 501B (more transparent and better tone adjustment range IMO -- and better battery life). I"ve ordered a Bill and Becky J-45 for the bridge position which I know will be awhile but it'll be great I'm sure. This bass may never be sold. It's the smoothest fastest fretless I've ever held in my trembling hands. Name is John by the way.

I mainly came here to keep up on Bill Lawrence and then saw the rest of the good info and decided to hang out for a bit. Bass is the first thing I learned, and guitar is my second instrument...and rightfully so. Not that I'm a world shaping bassist, ha ha...but my guitar playing is rather less inspiring if you know what I mean. The cool thing is that my youngest daughter (15) decided to take up bass and wants to learn fretless so she has my other fretless (Dean Edge 5) and I'm getting her started. The others are all grown up and married and play things like flute and such like -- but the youngest is probably the one most like me in a lot of ways (poor child)... I told a guitar friend of mine I was getting some pickups from THE Bill Lawrence and he got real excited. He might be ordering some for his Strat soon. He's underwhelmed by the tone of this old Strat after having someone restore it a bit. Neck and all is nice now but he's not satisfied with the sound. I'll be steering him over here to look at the posts on the q-filter and the like. He records quite a bit so some noiseless pickups with actual tone appeal to him. Posts: 17 Mon, Aug 25, 2008 02:50:20	Ha ha! Well, the q-filter is apparently a beautiful thing for big ol' humbuckers. I'm curious about the J-45 Q setup. Will you share the component values you used? Did you get a special bass Q for that or is it a guitar one with the J-45's? I'm considering a change where I'll eliminate the blend pot and put a master q-filter in with a standard 3-way pickup switch. Might be interesting with two J-45's in there and that setup. How would you describe the Geddy's sounds with your setup? Or have you already? If the information's around I can just search it up. IIRC, one of the board's budding builders also used to use Carvin necks before he started making his own. There also used to be quite a few discussions about Carvin's amps, especially the smaller tube guitar amps. Quality is unmistakable in most stuff and it's very good prices for quality American made gear (for those of us in the states who care about such things -- I've been in manufacturing most of my life and have an inherent bias, lol).
