I was wondering if the modern computer controlled body cutting equipment has eliminated the need for neck shimming.
My Carvin Bolt kit and two guitars I assembled using USA Custom Guitars bodies (one with a Carvin neck, and one with a USA Custom Guitars neck) went together perfectly without a neck shim.
On the other hand, I've refinished my '64 Fender Mustang several times (just completed the 3rd refinish), and it requires a neck shim. I don't recall it having a shim when I first took off the neck (maybe 30 years ago) Maybe I didn't know what it was back then and lost it. But I had to put a shim in the neck pocket ever since the first time I reassembled it because the strings were way high even with the bridge all the way down.
