There is a lot to see. Don't really know where to start, how to prioritize, where to get the hotels and all that. Some busy weeks of planning coming...
Anybody have any good pointers or tips?

Well, by chance, we booked flights to LA on Christmas eve and then back from SFO two weeks later.

If you don't mind me asking; how much does a trip like that cost aproximately?
I've started thinking about going over to the States myself sometime in the next couple of years. I'd really like to go see New York. You know, even though the value of the US dollar has risen lately, you should take advantage of the cheaper gear prices over there. Personally, I'd buy a couple of Kramers or Gunslingers and ship back home. |

that is nice!
Cannot be of much help regarding California, but check the web for guitar center in LA or SFO So will you be driving up the PCH from LA to SFO? Then take the exit at San Louis Obispo, drive the normal road theough Big Sur and Montrerrey and get abck on the highway in Slainas (heard that that is a nice countryside / seaside view trip). Also my friends told me that Mexicali is quite fine, should you plan to go down south to Mexico. |

Yes, LA, up the Coast highway to SF.
I'd love to visit Mexico too. But... don't know if wecan fit it. We'll see. Also I hear the border region is not really safe. On wiki travel they have a US stat claimer that says since April 2008 it's not safe due to drug lord fights and such. We did a trip to NYC in 1997 and it cost us 5000FIM (850€) each, IIRC. And the flight was more than half of that (2800FIM). This time it'll cost a lot more, as we are not THAT tight money wise anymore. The flights were 670€. And the hotels look to be a lot more expensive than the lfunky little Carlton Arms we chorse in NYC: http://www.carltonarms.com/ (we got student discount and 7 nights and in advance discount, so it was like $60 a night for double room (shared bath), IIRC). And renting a car will mean added cost too, as we want to see the places in between them big cities!

I spent three weeks in and around SFO and Northern California in August. SFO and Berkeley (Berkeley hills) are very interesting, you could easily spend 4-5
days in the area. I definitely recommend a bicycle trip over the GG bridge over to Sausalito - but put on some warm clothing.
One important tip for accomodation when you're in the SFO area: If you're looking for affordable hotels in SFO, you might end up in some really crappy place...you know there are 'not so good' quarters in every bigger city. What we did later was to go to small hotels/motels in Oakland, which is just over the bay bridge and is easily reached by the metro system (20 minutes from downtown SFO). There you can find simple, clean, and affordable motels and you aren't farther away from the centre than the affordable hotels in SFO. We also went over to Napa Valley and on to several national parks (Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, Lassen Volcano), and these are all very nice, but probably too far off your route. We didn't have the time to go south of SFO.
You can say you to
me.

For Jonas: If you book well in advance (a month should do) you shallbe able to get tickets to New York pretty cheap. I donot know about flight from Finland but
Prague - NY direct can be purchased fro about 350 EUR all in return. My tickets to Baltimore through NY in February were something like 400... and Lufthansa
has got some good offers to US destinations now.
For NY I would reccomend to wait till some time like may ... just to see Yankees or Mets playing home Weelie: Just a rich coming from me, but ... if you do a trip preaparation at home and plan places where you would like to stay, you might ask some travel agent to book you some reasonable quality hotels for good price in the selected locations (I have used Carlson Wagonlit for that, but any good agent shall be able to o it for you). As it regards to Mexico, at the time I was over there was a gunfight at the border and in Reynosa right next to the factory I visited a day later between the local policía municipal (part of the drug gang) and the Federáles ... pretty weird feeling. If Jossy (have not heard from him here for a while) he would probably have hints on which art of Mexico is safer. |
